Hey guys and gals,

As many of you know, I set up the User-Based DarkBASIC Professional Online Help files aptly named 'dbHelp', where everyone and anyone can submit tips, tidbits, and general info about commands, and even new commands themselves!

However, a dark day is upon us!
My Host has gone down, and is down forever. But, it's ok! Now I have a chance to set up a proper domain and website where I have a guarenteed host, and my own domain.

So, this is where you come in;
What should be the name of the new domain?

dbhelp.com is, unfortunatly, taken.
So, here's a short list of possible domain names that I am thinking about.

01 - dbhelponline.com
02 - dbhelpsite.com
03 - thedbhelp.com
04 - dbhelp.us
05 - dbhelp.biz
06 - darkbasichelp.com
07 - darkbasichelp.us
08 - darkbasichelp.biz
09 - darkbasiconline.us
10 - darkbasiconline.us
11 - darkbasiconline.biz

12 - dbf1.com - Spaceman's suggestion.

At the suggestion of John, I think I may add some more generic, TGC related ones...

13 - tgchelp.com
14 - tgcf1.com
15 - thegamecreatorshelp.com

16 - thehelpcreators.com
17 - darkhelpfiles.com
18 - darkhelp.com

Have a look, and see what looks the best for you, then post what you like.
Or, if you can think of a nice, sexy name ( within reason ) that isn't taken, then say so, and I'll add it to the list.

Thanks guys.
Remember, this entire system is made for, run by, and expanded from you as the community - You are the people using it, and as such, I want you to have a say in what it's called!

Cheers,
Jess.

[EDIT] Here's a running total;

tgcf1.com &/or dbf1.com - 6
dbhelpsite.com - 1
darkbasichelp.com - 9
DarkHelpFiles.com - 2
TGCHelp.com - 6
thehelpcreators.com - 3
[/EDIT]

Good idea!
How about dbF1.com to make it short?

After a little explaining from Jess, I get the dbf1 idea.. I like it.. Could have a nice logo! Could you maybe register two domains (they're pretty cheap from places like reg123, etc). get DBF1.com and darkbasichelp.com?

How about using TGC instead of darkbasic, then you have the option to expand your language base.

Also you could still use your domain when TGC decide to call their next product light basic or something

06 - darkbasichelp.com

Self explanitory, pretty short. Or

13 - dbgosuckaneggnoob.com

Might work as well

Fitz, thanks for the suggestion, and for the praise

Nick, sure, I can do that, but it'll cost me more money. I don't mind, though, it's for the community, damn it!

John,
Good-thinking!
I think I may choose a 'main' domain, something like dbf1.com, then expand that out to include others ( after the suggestion that Nick gave )

Or, maybe a tgcf1.com, then expand that to include dbf1.com, fpscf1.com, dgdkf1.com, t3dgmf1.com, dbpf1.com ... Hmm, I can see a whole family cropping up here!

I'll add some suggestions for TGC-related to the list

[EDIT]
Cash, thanks for the serious suggestion

Alrighty, I want to get this sorted by tomorrow some-time, so I think I'll take last orders from now to 24hrs from this post, and then I'll see what you guy's think.

So far, it looks like TGChelp.com ( with darkbasichelp.com ) , or TGCF1.com ( with dbf1.com ) are the two options I will go choose from. ( The second is prefered ).

Again, if you want to have some input, then speak now or forever hold your peace.

TGCHELP.COM

Then have subdomains such as

DBP.TGCHELP.COM
DBC.TGCHELP.COM
FPSC.TGCHELP.COM
T3GM.TGCHELP.COM
DGSDK.TGCHELP.COM
......

I'm with Powersoft.. good idea!! Saves getting lots of domains too

One concern.. How likely is it that TGC are going to be utter [insert expletive here]'s and try to claim stuff from you for using their brand in the URL? Kinda like the MikeRowSoft.com saga...

Of the current suggestions I would vote for darkbasichelp.com ... it is what it is.

How soon can we look forward to seeing the help files back online? They were incredibly useful

Well, after the suggestion, I think I want to eventually expand it out to cover alot of ( if not all ) of TGC's products, so it'd be wiser to make it tgchelp.com or tgcF1.com ( I really do like the sound of the F1 part... It's just so apt, isn't it? You press the F1 key to get help. But then again, 'help' is more intuitive, you know what it is straight away ).

Scraggle,
Like I said, I want to register the domain in about 22hours, which means it should be cleared and payed for etc in another 10 or so hours, I hope, and then I can start uploading everything again - A simple matter of running one gigantic MySQL file, and copy + pasting all the source files back online, it's a 30 minute job at the most ( without any misfortunes on the way, that is! ).

This is quite fun, to be honest. I'm humbled by John's more than adequet hosting, and am very delighted to see that the community is interested so much in this project

Thanks everyone!
Jess.

If you expand to the DGDK aswell that doesn´t use F1 for help. It would be more like:
openupheaderfile.com
I like HowDo´s suggestion of darkhelpfiles.com or darkhelp.com.If not then tgchelp.com seams the easiest and most open.

How about DBDN.com Homage to the old DB Developers Network. If it has no copyright problems and is available.

Of the two you are choosing from i like TGCHelp.com or DBF1.com but I don't really like TGCF1.com. I don't know why but it just doesn't sound right to me.

Can't wait to have dbHelp up again Good luck

Take care

I prefer the 'help' suffix to the 'F1' suffix.
F1 has and always will mean Formula One to me

Thanks guys

Raven, I've spoken with him before about it, and it's because I am using a MySQL Database, he doesn't want to set it up for me, oh well.

I've added a running total to the first post.

If I were to choose between tgchelp.com ( using dbp.tgchelp.com for dbHelp's new home ), or just plain ole darkbasichelp.com, which would everyone prefer?

Jess.

F1 is formula one. I don't like it.

TheHelpCreators.com is clever, but I don't like it either. It is not self explanatory.

darkbasichelp.com is much clearer.

IMHO - darkbasichelp.com
As a subdomain at least.

F1 - neat, obscure and geeky. But for today's mousehappy whats-a-shortcut-key? generation (thats the people who need the most help) - they don't know an F1 from a B1. IMHO (and H = HUMBLE dispite what some goofs think.)

I like the DBF1.com and definately agree on it having a good logo potential. Find it odd how many people in a programming thread think Formulae 1, all I know about that is something to do with cars. Fast ones I imagine.

I don't suppose something like dbwtf.com would be appropriate?

Catalyst, I'm with you on that one... F1 mean 'Help' to me, not the races... Although, I admit I know a little bit about it, I am not in the slightest interested

It looks like darkbasichelp.com is a winner so far, but the f1's are gaining!

Who will win?
Which domain will become the one people use?

Stay tuned to find out this and much, much more next week!

I still like tgchelp.com myself.

With the reason being we don't exactly know where all this will be in three to five years (assuming Jess is still in the fold) and what the name of any forth coming programs and languages might be.

Just curious; can a name have an underscore like tgc_help.com to make it more plain or readable?

The title is not as important as getting the info out about the sites existance.

I also reccomend that Jess set it up with small ads to off set the cost since he is undertaking this without any assistance from TGC. It just isn't right that a user is shouldering the burden for supplying the proper help for the system out of his own pocket.

I know we all find ads to be a pain but if it can keep it free then it is worth it.

You can habe hyphens, like in my sites URL... Can work quite well.

Google Ads might work. They fairly non-intrusive.

I already had google ads on dbHelp

Right at the very bottom of every page - Very unintrusive, but still got a few click throughs.

I don't want money for this, I'm helping out of the kindness of my heart, I just want people to use the system - that's all the payment I need.

I mean, seriously, it's about $27AU if I register two domains for a year each, or one for two years. I'm not exactly out of pocket for that am I?

It's cheap to have webspace, the only resource I lose out on is my time, but I'm happy to give that up for the community.

I've updated the tally with the two new 'votes'

Jess.

Nick, it's just cos dbSpot went bust. I've uploaded my avatar to another host - You should be able to see it now

Underlord,
Those are all too generic ( other than tgchelp.com ) - it'd be good to cover lots of topics related to games, but that's just too broad of a spectrum. For now, I'll leave it as dbHelp with the hope to expand into other TGC products in the future.

Thanks for the suggestions, though!

Sorry to those expecting it to be online today, you'll have to wait a while longer till I get the domain registered properly!

I know when i made my .net domain i had the biggest problem of thinking of a name for it i eventually went with DarkUniverse.net because it wasnt registured and for some things i will be making any subdomain like

Zombie.darkuniverse.net would work well but stuff like dbpworlds.darkuniverse.net dosnt work to well i eventually picked it just because it grew on me and it seemed like a good choice at the time.

I don't regret getting the domain since i can host unlimited .com/.net and subdomains =) i can always make my own dbp.com website or thus lack of.

My suggestion to you is just to think of a name that you like or that discribs the site its self. i think DBhelp is a good one because thats what its about. Help.

So....good luck on your quest young grasshopper.

I would go with a .com .net or .us no .biz or anything like that or hey maybe even .org

But in all odd's here is a good one

Programmingthegames.com or something haha just thought of that one i think thats a good one too lol.

either .com, .co.uk or .org.. None of the others. In the UK, .us and .biz are very VERY rarely known. Whenever you think of a website its a .com or MAYBE a .co.uk.
