I've seen this being done on cgsociety, but im not quite experienced enough to challenge someone there. I was wondering if anyone thought this was a good idea and wanted to maybe try it out? see how succesful it is

Here's how it works: someone declares that they are up for a challenge, and another modeller has to challenge them to a competition.

A time is then set (usually two weeks or so, but the time can be decided by the contestants) in which to complete a model, which will be presented after the time limit has passed, for everyone in the forums to judge for themselves. But first a referee is selected (maybe someone could nominate themselves or perhaps a mod would volunter). This person decides what the rules will be for that specific challenge, ie/

- what will be modelled
- how many polygons it should be
- max texture size
- any other aspects that are to be included in the model or final image

At the end, screenshots are presented, displaying the final model, and the person who recieves the most votes from the forum goers wins.

A WIP must be presented along the way, so that each challenger knows they are still modelling for a reason.

The reason this is different to the larger modelling competition, is that because it is between just two individuals, those two people are more likely to work harder to beat the other, and there will most probably be two very well designing modells at the end.

Also, I think it would be more fun if it were more exclusive, and several competitions might be held at one time, it would be interseting to see the range of things being produced.

I personally think this is a great idea.

If anyone thinks this is a cool idea and wants to try it out on these forums, you might have guessed that I am up for a challenge. alternatively you can challenge anyone you like

well if you are up to a challenge then lets see what you've got....

I challenge you to a modeling session.

Lets keep it simple to start with shall we.

Time limit: 2 weeks from the time you agree to accept this challenge.
Subject we will be modeling is this Rooster.( see attachment).

Rules to follow.
1. You can use any 3D software you have.
2. You can not use any premade models you have. You must start a new model.
3. You can texture the model if you want. But the contest is on the shape/form of the model not the texture.
4. You must model the Rooster as one object. Meaning the wings and the legs must be part of the mesh and not dislocated from the model. A wire frame render or screen capture must prove this to be true.
5. Renders of your WIP should be posted as you build the model.

So if you are ready for a chalenge then you have one. What do you say??????

Avenging Eagle, HEY!!!!Nice to see you too. I am in the process of learning DB so I thought I would help with what I know and thats 3D and have a little fun while I learn. Who knows once I get to a point where I don't understand something some one will remember me helping them and lend a hand. Some times the ol timers are kinda rough on us newbies.( ouch did I say newbie )lololol..But I understand their frustration. I know "READ THE MANUAL". "AND USE THE SEARCH" before you ask..lol.. I hope to see some of your work. I am turning my olmanmunk movie idea into a video game..Well thats the plan but I have a few thousand years of learning before that will happen...

Is this rooster going to be low poly game model. I went ahead and downloaded the image and I going to give it a shot. If this going to be 1 to 1 challenge I am just doing it for fun

ooh responses..

@the crazy - it wont take too many more people before this becomes a full out open forum competition. like i said, the idea is that we can have several challenges going on at once. soo, you could nominate yourself for a challenge. looks like we might have some challengers waiting already eg/ dononeton

@dononeton - not sure really, i was going to ask MP3D

@MP3D - I accept your challenge, what is the poly limit? i vote low poly. also, i think that rather than modelling from a certain concept, the subject should be a bit looser, like we have to just model any 'rooster'

Then we'll be able to be more creative in the design, and people can judge based on

- creativity (how out of the way has the person gone on the model?)
- originality (how unique is the model?)
- skill (how well is the model designed?)
- technique (less noticable things, like if its just a big mess of polygons or not, how well the joints are made and how easy it would be to animate them, the structure of the wireframe, so it doesnt have about 20 polygons converging to one point anywhere)


anyway, tell me if you are ok with the topic just being 'rooster' and then we'll start.

Sounds good to me. I will be useing the concept art I posted I have been wanting to model that guy for awhile now.

Poly count...Sure low poly would be great but you must make sure your Rooster has form/shape and doesn't look like a box....cool...

And I use edgeloops to model so my mesh will flow like a river. and will accept anim8ion/morphs to boot. Avenging Eagle knows my work.............Just a little rant...lololol

- model an ogre
- style should be as your current game
- have 1 hour of modeling time
- 1 hour of texturing time, (UV mapping has no time limit)
- have 1 week from excepted duel to finish the model
- must post an update 3 days or less after excepted duel
- must be a new model
- model must be under 1k polys...although, even thats a lot
- extra points for less polys and good use of them

so what say you indi!? lol

lol, well, you were the first person to show me how to model. I remember asking you on MSN, and you educated me in the art of extruding! I was mighty impressed. I've come a fair way since then, all thanks to you!

thats low poly?? thats around 500 polys (& 1000 triangles) just for the beak and eyes!!

edit : sorry, I reread everything, and there is no mention of the entry having to be low poly...so I guess this is fine.

On second thoughts though, since this is basically a game dev forum, why not incline even such small competitions to low poly? Would help practice and would let newbies to modelling learn the art....

ok, here are the conditions:
- must be 500 polies or less
- you have 2 weeks to model
- doesn't have to be textured
- you have 3 days from today to post a wip shot
- winner will recieve a medal that can go in their sig

i'v been thinking that winners of these modeling, and even programing compos that are held on the forums, should recieve a small medal picture that can be put onto their signatures, even make them unique so that people know why they have them. It be cooler if they were next to your avatar, like some modeling forums do.

filya. Where do you see a poly count? Where are you getting 500 polies?

anywho my model will be low poly. The way I model is get the form of the model then optimize the mesh and reduce the count if I am going for low poly.

just an estimate. You can easily see the polys on your wireframed model.
I don't know much about modelling, but I think the better way would be make a low poly first and then if you are left with polys to spare, use them for some better shapes.

I've generally found developing a low mesh and working upwards is easier than working backwards.. this said my weapon of choice is Maya and it's just a pure dream to work in either direction due to it's polytools.

Once had the challenge of removing enough polygons from the 25k poly Lara model from Legend to something that would run at a reasonable frame-rate on the PSP. (aim was 5,000 polygons)
Wasn't easy without having to completely re-map the textures, but thanks to how Maya works ended up doing it within a few hours. Only needing to do some minor editing to the skeleton and map to get it to work close to identical to the high-poly variation.

I'd say your best option with modelling generally is to get the shape right, then aim for making it look pretty from all angles before skinning and mapping. Then again I often have unauthodox ways of doing things.

Do certainly like the whole "medal scheme" though, would certainly kick people up a notch if they have something (no matter how small) to work towards.
I think what would actually work far better would be an achievement system like you have on XBL. So people could then view the thread you gained you're achievement points from, and you could also have a rating system so people can see how friendly/helpful you are.

Each competition entered would then end up having a score based on where you come. Think that'd be kinda cool, but wouldn't hold your breath on such a feature ever being implimented.

everyone has their own style of modeling, so there's techniclly no wrong way of modeling...well, i'll say there is, but if you do it, your computer won't explode and kill you.

it's always easier to work from a low poly mesh, and work your way up. Get the basic shape down, even if it's just a bunch of extruded boxes.

though i've developed different techniques for modeling different types of models, and depending on what modeling package i use.

if i'm using max, i'll build a high poly human mesh by using box modeling...but i'll start off with a plain and extrude edges and then edit form there to get the shape. if i'm modeling low poly human, i'll use a box extrusion technique.

if i'm using maya, nurbs for all my high poly stuff

though now i use Truespace, i've developed a new technique for modeling objects, since it's setup different, and it dosn't support edge extrusion.

as for the rewards system, it would be cool to see implimented, so we can reconigze the great work the people of the forum develop.

Okay rules for our 1 v 1:

-A space-man type thing. Can be anything from a master chief like thing to an astronaut.
-1500 poly limit.
-Max texture 1024X1024

I guess rendering tricks will be okay although i don't have any up my sleeves. If these are okay with then we can get started.

Edit: Lets do a two week time limit.

@MP3D - yep im still here, i've started mine, but had to stop due to college work, i'm carrying on tonight, will probably post a WIP quite soon.

@MOONDOG - that's a great idea! you could have the blue ribbons for each battle that you have won, and one red ribbon, if you are currently undefeated since your last battle, so people will know to challenge you ;P what dyou think?

@everyone - i was thinking, this thread is eventually going to get too big. Should we branch off and have seperate threads for different challenges, or just different threads for voting in, and have all the WIPs in this thread?
