The only problem I see with the crossbow is the angle he bends his arm when reloading and the time it takes him to reload other than that good work

Thats probably how long it would take to reload, unless you mean its too quick. I have one question, and that is will there be a couple of swords and axes coming, maybe a longbow? Oops, I do have more than one question. Will you be making segments and stuff for castles and medieval fantasy buildings with thatched roofs and stuff.

What your doing is great anyway, so yeah keep up the good work.

you really think he has been waiting for your advice to consider this as a profession??

on topic : nice video Easy to imagine a whole bunch of RPG style games coming up in the showcase section soon. All with excellent characters, realistic weapons, and a crappy (comparatively) environment

No I don't. It's called, ENCOURAGEMENT. i.e. I'm letting him know that it's very possible. Do you have a problem with the fact that I think he's good enough to take that as a profession?

Not if you bought Ben's Medieval Pack.

Thanks again everyone. I'll be making a nice selection of segments and entities also for this pack, so the characters have a place to live.

I'm striving for an April release to coincide with X10's release.

Quote: "Bond- man god stuff, though the reload should be down...The crossbow needs to be out of view to reload"

Yeah I discussed this a few responses back, and ultimately decided to go with the hand-reload just for the visuals, although yes not realistic. You know what? I'll include both animations in the finished model, and the experienced users can change the gunspec file to use either the "hand reload" or "out of view" reload. Although I think most people will want the hand reload for coolness sake. Thanks

But won't that bump up the .X files size? Having both anims.

Glad to hear you'll have some segments. Mine segements would be great for the dwarfs

oh right thats not much then, I've never actually looked at the size...oops.

And also, it would only be one of the anims (reload); so it would be more like 130kb.

Are you planning on making any other characters like elves and humans and knights in shining armour (or not). Because for a medieval fantasy pack yo really need those things.

I can't wait to buy this. But then we'll need fantasy weapons and segments and other entities to go with it. But that's a different time and place.

Bond, awesome work as usual, total respect !

What I woudl like ot know and this has absolutely nothing to do with how the models look, but rather how they work.
Are the bow class weapons going to use projectile weaponsas their base, such as the RPG/LAW etc?
The reaosn I ask this is that this would render them almost useless for Multiplayer titles, could the projectiles be made into an actual firing animation instead?

This is obviously much harder work and I'm notsuggesting that you do it, but I was wondering about it.

Great job! I say the vids. My only complaint is that the bolt in the crossbow looked a bit to fat, and not lond enough.

Great work though!

Hey, I also went to the page, and it was absolutely awesome. I loved all of the models, and I would like to know when this pack will be available. I suspect not for a while, due to the fact that you need to make quite a few segments and stuff. But yeah looking good, Another thing: Have you made any more weapons yet? I really am looking forward to seeing a broadsword or axe in action.

I don't know if you should let us buy this although I'd LOVE to! You would get a LOT of money if you where to sell it to someone like EA, THQ, or a game company like that, they are VERY professional models!

Keep up the great work!

Finally got to check out the vids and gotta say these are great looking models, Bond!

The positioning seems a bit off to me because the camera seems like it's in the chest for the oilbomb and far to the left of the player for the crossbow. Maybe it has something to do with where it feels like the shoulders are placed and the amount of upper arm shown.

I think the crossbow fire looks convincing enough for what FPSC is capable of but something seems anatomically wrong with the crossbow itself. Suppose it could just be perspective playing tricks but it looks like the string(?) only travels a couple inches foreward and apperars to have no real tension because of how effortlessly it looks like it is to knock.

Anyways, just a couple crits for you because I know you're a fantastic artist and animator who can take it the right way. Great looking first attempts in all honesty. Just be careful you don't end up like me and re-animating half your stuff XD

Thanks for the new comments everyone.

Now you guys DO realize that Weapon Creator doesn't allow you to create your own weapons, right? More appropriately it should be named Weapon Importer because that's really all it does, although it's a great tool for that purpose.

@Errant:
Thank you very much for the comments! I may adjust the positioning a bit, I know what you mean, but I didn't want the crossbow to be too intrusive. I played a few games where I hated certain weapons because they just seemed to be in my line of sight.

About the crossbow, it's a totally fictional reload, so let's get that out of the way first of all. The string probably doesn't have as much travel as a real crossbow, but then again I honestly don't know. I think it will have more apparent "impact" when sound effects are added. For example, a nice sharp "THWANG" sound when being fired, and also a nice "creaking" sound as the string is pulled back will help give the illusion of more tension. I might have to hit you up with a few questions along the way.

By the way, is it true that all flak weapons have to be the "exploding" type? Changing the settings in the flak spec doesn't seem to have any effect, everything explodes in a mushroom cloud.

No probs. The positioning of the actual weapon looks fine. It's just durring the reload that things look awkward because of how the left arms looks like it is attached to the right side of the body. You're right though, sound fx will add much to the experience.

Sadly that seems to be the case with flak weapons. It's what has dashed my hopes for sniper rifles with bullet drop, thrown knives, arrows, napalm, rocks, office supplies, etc, etc. I hope it's something that TGC makes a little more robust in the future because the foundation is clearly there and there is no shortage of creative users who would happily exploit a richer flak system.

Oh ok, thanks. That's unfortunate...I had asked Lee about this too, he said he is working on the new explosions for X10 right now and maybe in the future he would add more support for these types of weapons, keep your fingers crossed.

That's the problem I'm having now with the crossbow and similar weapons: What do you do when you're out of ammo? If FPSC could just detect when the player is out of ammo for a particular weapon, then call for an alternate set of animations, such "idle_noammo", "move_noammo", etc. You get the idea...otherwise the crossbow automatically shows the reload animation and I'm stuck showing a loaded crossbow even though there is no ammo remaining. Crap.

Of course, the solution would be to have the crossbow as a flak weapon, but then you're stuck with exploding arrows.

Well that is really tempting, to fullfill my childhood Stallone fantasy of being Rambo, but not really right for this pack.

If I can get myself motivated, I'll finish the animations for the bow and arrow tomorrow. From there I think I'll move on to other stuff before coming back to the weapons. Hopefully Lee can come up with an easy solution for me before this pack is released, he seems to be a pretty accomodating guy. He added support for the dual weapons in Model Pack 6, so maybe he can hook me up too.

you could make it so for the shooting animation the guy loads an arrow into the loaded crossbow before firing.

@bond1

Maybe you can make bow and arrow weapon, as projectile weapon. Then we could actually see the arrows fly and make contact with target. I would use the rocket launcher in Fpsc as a building block for creating projectile weapons.
Just some suggestions.

I'll will be looking forward to this pack coming out soon.

I have thought about that, but it would all have to happen fairly quickly...players are used to having immediate feedback when pressing fire. Having to wait for a loading sequence when an enemy suddenly appears would drive most people crazy I think.

Yeah but as Errant and I mentioned a few posts ago, all projectile weapons have to the exploding type...so exploding crossbow, exploding bow and arrow, etc. Kind of ruins the experience. If Lee can give some sort of fix then I can avoid shoddy workarounds.

I mean If he pulls the string back the loads only the arrow in really quickly like in under a second. Could you make a projectile that didn't explode an mess arond with that? I'll test it with the bazooka and tell you if it can damage enemys without exploding then just fall to the ground. I think if it worked it would be kinda cool. That way you could have arrow drop and you would need lots of skill to use it long range.

Nope, all projectiles explode by default, it's hard coded into FPSC right now. I'm just gonna sit on the weapons for now, work on other stuff. Hopefully I can convince Lee to work out something for me, although I'm sure he's pretty busy with other stuff right now.
