Alright, we had a pretty good first competition, but, with only two final entry's! It's alright, and I'm hoping to do better this comp.

TGC 3D Comp 2: Steel Rivets

This will be a normal modeling competition, with no limits except for the topic. So as the title says, your object must be made of steel(metal in general if you wish), and have rivets. After that, anything goes, high poly, low poly, spline, textured, untextured, rendered or screen grabbed.

Global 3D Comp rules always apply, so make sure you read over them before participating.

This will be a 3 week competition, starting today, and ending on:
May 27, 2007: 11:59PM EST

Good luck everyone, hope you enjoy this one!

edit: eh, my comp banner isn't working, i'll fix it when i can

Nice one, dunno if I'll enter this, unless I can cheat and use the model I just made up in the demo of Zbrush, apply a metallic material and enter it, but that would be cheeky

prizes like what? i'm not buying anyone anything, lol, i got bills to pay...if someone wants to sponsor a prize, then I'm all for it...besides, before i took over, there were no prizes, people just enter the contests for fun...i don't see how thats changed any. we actually had quit a few people entering the first one, but because of the deadline i had, only two people were able to enter, and even then they were not done. so i extended the time for this comp, see if more people can get entry's in on time, also, the subject is very vague, so anything goes.

Hmm.. I hate trying to texture metal, so I'm afraid i'll back out of this one too. I got my own comp i need to run anyway. Also you should give some kind of example as alot of people don't know what ya mean.

uhm...i'm not sure how to explain it further...make an object, that looks like it's made of metal, and has rivets? like a WWII plane...or a submarine...or a tank...or a metalic building...or a robot of some kind...or a gundam wing...a metal box...a futuristic ship...a dooms day rocket....i'm not sure how to explain it more, lol.

anyway, you don't have to have it textured at all...if it looks like it would be made of metal, and you show rivets on it, then it's all good

just go crazy with this comp...you could even model a random object, like an apple, and make it look like it's made of metal and has rivets...there is no limit to the object

Ok I have knocked up a model over my lunch break.

The model is low-polygon, and really doesn't have a heap of rivets, but it does have them, and it it mainly made of steel.

The interesting thing about this model is that the texturing was all done inside blender. I didn't use a single external app for texturing thanks to the improves texture painting in blender. There's still room for a lot of improvement with the tools, but it is coming a long way.

Total work time - 1 hour give or take
Polys - 735
texture - 1 512x512

And now for some screens...

Here's my WIP, based on the Jupiter 2 from the Lost In Space film; It's not an exact replica as I realized I got a few things wrong so I shall just improvise now, it has a basic interior too. Rivets and such will be added in the skin.

Wasn't feeling very creative so i made a submarine, picture attached.
All rivets are modeled not part of the texture.

I wanted to, I just didn't have any time... Here's the concept sketch I made for the character I wanted to make. There's still some cleanup to do on the image, but pretty much his armor was meant to have rivets along the helmet, shoulder pads, and chest pieces.

Looks like a tie.. oh wait, no. My mistake.
seeing as voting ended days ago, i feel obliged to say, "dark coder.. i think you may have clinched it"

Well done

And bring on the next challenge! I hope it's something in-game based. like a level, a set of rts buildings/units or a platformer baddy(s). something not too realistic that involves a lot of creativity.

you might've guessed.. i'm eager.

I'd offer any support, I won't run it as this is a bad time - hence I passed on the TGC challenge onto Moondog (It's a worse time for Moondog I can imagine) but I'll offer help until Moondog returns or someone permanently takes his place (if he wills it)

Also while we're at it, I had a couple of ideas for some reason I never got around to executing on the TGC challenge. Like trying to get BatVink to post a little section on all of the winners of each month. So he doesn't have to do much, I'll even write the section myself each month - if I fall behind for some reason I'll make sure I'll have a guy to back up.

But before I even drop an email to him, I want to hear what the main dudes here wish to say on that.
