I got an email from Ageia today, explaining a contest for PhysX. Here is the exact email's text:

Here are the prizes and rules, specifically:

In return, we will award 3 prizes: $1000, $750, and $500 for the
top three responses that Ageia deems really rocks the world!

In addition, the first 250 entries will be entered into a pool
from which a winner will be selected and will win a $500 prize.

Contest rules are simple: Entries must be received via email no
later than July 30, 2007. Please use the following formats (Text
or HTML email, Demo with written description, PowerPoint, MS Word,
or PDF).

Be sure to let us know how you are using the technology; what is
unique about the game/application; and what the customer benefits
are.

We will notify winners by email and post the results on the Ageia
website by August 15, 2007.

I assume that this will apply to DarkPhysics users considering that DarkPhysics uses PhysX, so... Have fun.

Cheers,

-naota

This looks suspicious. What was the e-mail address of the solicitor? Why wouldn't they announce it through TGC? If they are soliciting individuals then why wouldn't they have e-mailed me, a prize winner in their past contest?

What really doesn't make sense is the desire for an essay. They wouldn't read hundreds of essays, and an essay is a terrible way to describe a software application.

We don't know that. I don't think you've considered my points above. It looks suspicious to me, I pick up on scams very quickly. None of it makes sense.

Cash, I sent you an email... I'm not sure if you think that I am scamming people... But I am not. I got this from Ageia PhysX, and I have subscribed to Ageia PhysX.... I Sent you the exact email.

DB user, if I thought that you were trying to scam people, I'd have certainly said so.

It appears that you did not receive this e-mail from Ageia at all. You received it from someone that signed up for a free e-mail address from http://www.rock.com, and that person claims that they received the original e-mail from the SDK Manager at www.ageia.com. Why would someone managing a contest use a free e-mail address? Looks like a scam. Looks like they're using attributes of their free host to give the contest credibility as well.

yup,its legitament. I received the email as well(on my old address that I subscribed to ageia on). I understand where you are coming from with being suspicious though, because I recall some bogus "publishing" contracts some time ago. This is all good though.

@Cash Curtis II
I signed up at www.rock.com a while ago. darktwilight@rock.com Here is a list of my e-mail addresses for future reference.

Taken out

Some e-mails have less spam than others, and some have different purposes than others.

If you don't edit your post, they will all get ridiculous amounts of spam when they get harvested!

Maybe they purposely haven't updated their site yet, for example, if you signed up at ageia you get a head-start.

The competition is legitimate, and has only been sent to signed-up developers. However - watch this space, or more specifically the next newsletter.
