When I tried to install DBC again, right after inserting the CD the launcher 'performed an illegal operation and shut down'. When I ejected it, I got a BSOD telling me to put the CD back in. We all know there's no return from BSOD land, but I put the CD back in anyways. Being a Windows OS, my system instantly froze.

I thought it was an error with the CD-- installer on the boxed retail version-- so I tried my older CD, the CD-case online version you could get a while ago. The black CD with silver lettering, in case any of you have that one. It ran the launcher, but froze my computer when I pressed 'install'!

I've taken meticulous care of both CDs. They are flawless. I'm pretty sure it's some kind of an ME incompatibily. Anyone know what I can do?

don't use ME
don't use WIN98/WIN98SE
don't use WIN XP if you don't care about the changed graphics and if you don't have a very fast pc
use win2000

that's my little piece of advice about operating systems

but I'm not sure if that's the problem, maybe it might help if you just reinstall windows... but when you do this you can install another windows version if you like

did it work before in ME? if yes, then it should be solved by re-installing ME

Switch to 2000? Over my bloody mutilated limbless dead body!

There's no way I'm changing my OS. I'd hack my arms off first. 98 is the only OS that can decently play all of the old games I frequently play. They barely run in 2000.

The boxes say they are compatible with 98 and I haven't heard of this problem before. Seems like it's a more internal error, but I have no clue what.

Maybe if I disable autorun I can find a way to install it...

"Maybe if I disable autorun I can find a way to install it..."

Hold down CTRL when you insert the CD.
It'll stop Autorun from, err.. running.

Cheers,

Rich
PS It might be shift+ctrl, experiment, something does it.
