Which (in your oppinion)makes for better AI?
1.checking the bot's distance between the player and itslef and going from there,
or
2.making the bot move left until it reaches the player?

I'd say both. Make the bot search for the player (opt 2) and once spoted he'd try reaching him (opt 1). Of course, don't limit its AI just on those two, unless it's as simple bot.

1., because there are many cases where having an enemy collide with the player would not be desirable. It might have an attack range. It might want to keep some distance between itself and the player.

I'd give the bot a field of vision, and if the player was in its field of vision it would spot you and move towards you.
You could also make a routine for the bot's patrol: he could just wander around looking from left to right, and then turn around and go back.
I say this because you don't want the bot to go in one direction, he might go past the player and just keep on going! lol

Your sig was erased by a mod because it's larger than 600x120
I didn't know about that rule and it was 659 x 126!
Isn't that a little OTT? I'm gonna have to re-make it because of 65 pixels!!!
