learn what the polytools are, and howto use them from the tutorials ... and basically thats all you need to know for howto model in it.

i'm kinda wondering how a kid could afford a $6,999 product though

I'd suggest a radeon 8500

1.)it's only around $130 (when i got mine at least a few months ago.)
2.)It offers great results.

Or go with the radeon 9500, a little more pricey, but better than the 8500.

Geforce I don't care for, but it is still pretty good.

Overall: radeon 8500

Maya/Max/Softimage all have special extensions for Quadro based graphics cards. the advantage of using essentially the same GPU is that the GeForce also get these special extension.

Rendering a basic scene on an AthlonXP 1400+ w/Radeon 9800pro w/512Mb DDR2 Ram you can expect to render a simple scene like a Box with 3 lights and a single shader level @ 640x480x32 with FSAA 8x within around 4 seconds and with the GeForce4mx 480 you can do it at 0.3 seconds.

Maya is primarily an OpenGL program the Radeon by far certainly are not OpenGL cards... you add to the fact that the CgFX plugin for it for realtime Shader implimentation, development & exporting is only supported on GeForce3/4/FX/Quadro4/XGL/FX cards - choosing a Radeon for graphics development nowadays is just plain stupid.

Hey I can get the money if only I can justify the price to my dad.
Which I doubt I can, "Please dad, go on.. I need it for.. better graphics yeah..." lol.

I'll probably just go for the geforce fx 5200 128mb DDR.

if you can try to justify a GeForceFX 5600Ti they'll pretty fast but shouldn't break the bank.
