Development

Development has being going on for a week with Jay a.k.a 'Onimusha' leading the game's design. The game itself is somewhere around 3% complete.

The player can move forward back and towards and away from the camera within limits (see Guardian Heroes). Kez has very few moves at the moment with lots planned for when the game gets finished ('08).

We really need support from other DB coders to help out things like snazzy lighting and special effects aswell as some tricky coding (we're having problems getting Kez' combo system down - somehow it just doesnt understand and walking through the side of a platform).

Tecnuro team:
Shan - Level Designer and a bit of everything
Jay "Onimusha" - Design and Lead coder

What we're working on now

* 2D animation (Enemies, animals, NPCs, Kez skills)
* Finishing off the first land 'Setri Forest'
* Code (Combos, tightening collision, physics, etc.)

Nice man. One thing though don't you think that he should be higher because his legs look quite squaty.

Let's just put it that you got your graphical side perfect and that this is a great example of a Team Request. Lets hope you get some crew out of this.

@ Deathead - thanks, but the look we're going for is odd like that I want to bring in that big-head, bug-eyed look of games like Ar-Tonelico and the Tales of series... really manga-like.

@ tha_rami - Dude, thanks we've all been working hard at this game, working intensively to get it looking nice; but we're by no means experts and help is needed to make it what it should be.

Like right now, the platform collision is a little off (he starts hopping up and down; when he's getting pushed back by a moving platform) and when we use the a 2D effect on a transparent background we always get black markings around the effect. Never smooth stuff.

I saw a beautiful special FX WIP project here, which i think is the cooolest thing ever, imagine this guy wielding an ice blade and shards of Ice bursting out of enemies...

The black marks, can't they be removed by using the alpha channel and blend in the alpha transition, or using another color (eg 255,0,255) as transperant color?

@ Deathhead - ur right, most mainstream anime is like that proportion, but theres another style called chibi, which is like more bug-eyed and cuter. The image of the game on the right below is the look we're aiming for.

----

The overall objective is to get this kind of battling:

With this kind of platforming:

New boss character for the 'Setri Forest' land:

'Tecza' is a master swordsman who - through the use of the water-spirit sealed inside his Vixen Blade - controls the element of water; higly skilled and overwhelmingly powerful he is a bloodthirsty adversary.

Although he is the boss of the first land Kez finds himself in, you will be required to fight Tecza several times throughout the game.

Expect lots of sword to sword fighting .

Yeah, maybe we didn't emphasize how helpful it would be if we got some pro help with this.

WE WOULD APPRECAITE HELP IN THE FOLLOWING:

* Sprite animation (enemies, NPCs, bosses)
* HUD and 2D UI artist
* 2D scenery artist (all scenery rendered as 2D)
* DB Pro Programming mastery (Collision, Special FX, Lighting, Physics, AI, optimisation of code - everything basically)
* Low poly 3D modeller (some scenery objects)

There have been fewer helpers that have come back to us than expected; either everyone's shy or they dont like this project .. *sigh* '(.

In any case, I thought I'd put up a video - there is a choppy framerate on the video nothing I can do about that; the game runs about 40fps. I'm trying hard to get it to push at 60fps.

Or most likely everyone's really busy with their own projects Don't get discouraged tho'; keep showing real progress and I'm sure you'll see more interest.

On that note, I think this looks very exciting. I especially like the character designs. I love the ornate costume on Katallia, kinda has a FFX-feel to it.

One criticism/suggestion: Katallia's pose is awkward, so you might want to use more a generic pose (as in Tecza's) to showcase her overall design. (If you must use this pose, see my reworked version attached as a jpeg.)

Good luck!

The objective now is to get this game out by the end of September for practical reasons; thus I stress again, if anyone wouldnt mind pitching in in ANY aspect of the game then please post here or get hold of us.

Right now we're on level two, more sprite animation and fixing up the code.

Development Update:

I haven't updated in a long while but we've been working hard on getting this game complete.

The 3D aspects of the game have posed many more challenges than we had originally expected, particularly since the code structure did not take into account future incorporation of useful DLLs, nor for the construction of levels using memblocks.

It is now apparent that we did not 'future proof' our code, for tweaking and although what we had initially coded seemed good enough; under the hood, the laissez-faire coding would mean the game would not be completed at a high standard for a long while.

Consequently, as it stands, the game engine has been overhauled completely almost down to starting from scratch, so that the features described previously can be incorporated into the game to make development easier in the long-term.

I don't claim to be a DB King or anything but I'd like to help in some way, could I get a look at the combo and collision code?
I may also be able to help you out with the memblock levels.

Development Update

NEW STAGE! "Pink Gardens"

What's left to go?

Stages:

The 6 stages are all around 65% complete, with the only complete stage being that shown in the first post, Setri Forest.

Graphics & Gameplay:

Unfortunately, we've had to make drastic cuts to the RPG portions of the game (Kez will play more like an adventure/action-platformer/visual novel) to focus our efforts on the game's aesthetics, which, are still a decent standard but it can be rendered exponentially faster than before, allowing for a more fluid gaming experience.

We've little left graphically, we simply have some remaining sprite artwork to do and more special FX.

Story:

The story was written early into the game's development and nothing has changed, it's still epic (a thorough six chapters long) and still one of the key elements in the game, this will be presented in the form of movies with manga-stylized artwork and a voice over.

Music:

Music can make or break a game and for an indie game we're making sure that we leave a mark, the music is phenomenal so far, we have a library of nice tracks, so many that we don't know which to put where!
Regrettably, we didnt have any BGM when the first video was made, but you can hear samples from the game stages on our website.

link: http://www.tecnuro.co.uk/games/KezLoTF/video.html

By the way, all the music for the game has been completed .

Im gonna have to partially agree with Deathead. The characters do seem a little squatted with weird proportions.

I understand the fact that you are aiming for a chibi manga style. But if you look really carefully, the proportions of the 'body' is bigger with the 'head'. Thus body and head bigger. So is majorly proportion of the head to the body.

Looking at the characters in the game the proportion of the head and upper body is different from the legs portion, so it seems very midgety.

Overall it looks great, concept images are superb, but I just dont get how the sprites turned out different from the concepts.

Hmm, there seems to be concern here; while it would be impractical to re-do the sprites now, we will definately look at correcting the proportions at the end of the game.

If this doesnt manage to come around, it shouldn't feel all that strange for you whilst in play.

To hopefully reassure you, Mischief Makers was a game which at first seems to have ridiculous proportions but the styling soon became part of the game's charm.

Hopefully the demo next week will get you used to the style (here's hoping anyways).

Nah its cool, I wouldnt want you to change everything just cause I said it was off proportion.

But ya know just to add the comment since there was a discussion about the style. But overall its looking good!

Hey guys, we're gonna make some late additions to the game; we've realised that platforming is'nt the same as what it used to be and that the game needs to feel a little more 'rounded'.

So, we'd like to hear suggestions as to what should be in the game.

Also, whats the stance with moderate blood fx?

Its hard to suggest anything without a gameplay experience. Tecnuro Entertainment LTD, how about releasing the demo sooner? Not that I'm impatient, but to actually:

Quote: "needs to feel a little more 'rounded'."

I need to be "feeling" it with my own fingers before sugesting any rounded smooth adjustments.
