This is just the first time im posting in the 2D board, and the first time ive ever been here. I think this is the best place to post this.
Apophysis is an incredible fractal flame editor that combines beautifully with the powerful paint.net.
I love these two programs so much i had to put a thread here about them.
Theyre both free
http://www.apophysis.org/
http://www.getpaint.net/

Paint.NET opens about any format, so you can save tgas and ddss'(dds is the best for dbp)

heres a few things i made with paint.net alone

You could create real good high detailed explosions with these,
