is 256x256 the only area you can make a texture. I can't seem to cram all of my modle in that little space. can I make it bigger? if so do I take any bad consiquences (sp?)?

What UVmapping software are you using ??

If you are using Lithunwrap or Unwrap3D then just type in a new size when you want to export your map.

512x512 for example .. then save it out as your .bmp template ... or you can export your UVmap out as 1024x1024 + add tons of detail to your texture ..... then just resize it down to 512x512 or 256x256.

I read somewhere that 512x512 should be the Max texture size you should aim for using DB Pro. This is also the recommended size for many 3D engines and a number of older graphics cards (still in high circulation - I have one!) which can not cope with any larger than 512x512.

A good texture can and should be as low as 256x256.

In fact some of the best works I've seen on polycount.com were that size and some other even painted at that resolution.

A great trick is if you have a model that has good symmetry, unwrap one side, fold it over the other unwrapped side and draw half the texture. Or if it has a repeating pattern to drop those repeating UVWs onto the same part of the map.
