I'm still a noob just learning the fundamentals of DarkBASIC Classic, but I want to be able to use C++ someday, so I'm downloading this now, for future resources. After I get the hang of BASIC and can write stuff neatly and correctly in just a few minutes (such as a text-based program that uses your name and guesses your age or something), I'll start digging into C++. I'm guessing that'll be at least 6 months, though...

I'm starting my university project and I want to make sure I pick the right engine from the start :p

Well... C# wasn't designed to make games, DirectX is written in C++, I think I'd chalk it up to you lost 4 months waiting and should move forward man - for heavens sake - at least you'd be having more fun than waiting! Seriously...

How does that expression go... @$#$@# or get off the Pot LOL

I was hoping to see this product too, and it will be out, and it will be great... but I wouldn't hold my breath.

I agree with Jason and have started learning the raw DirectX stuff and XNA Game Studio while I'm waiting. Hopefully they'll have DarkGDK.NET out by September?

Question though: I assume since C# is very close to C++, I won't have too much trouble migrating my DarkGDK project to DarkGDK.NET when it finally is released?

I myself have been taking this time to learn xaml/silverlight. I must say, I like it and it might be awhile before I migrate back to dgdk.net, since xaml is built on top of dx9.

I've started reading up on DirectX also, or at least the 2D aspect of it. But mostly its to help me understand what's going on under the hood of DarkGDK. I picked up on XNA a while back but didn't know enough C# to understand the tutorials well, so I had to learn C#. Now I haven't gone back to XNA because of the need for an alpha mask which, I could probably create using DGDK. Amazing how everything is so related

I'd suspect NOT entirely only because I heard that TGC (ApexNow) is making a OOP wrapper fro the C# stuff like I made for the C++ stuff.

Definately doable.. just might not be a search-n-replace syntax clips sorta thing.

Use the Contact formfrom the home on the web page. TGC will NOT make you pay twice... you have to prove who you are thats all.

If I use VsC++ 2008 Express Edition to compile my DarkGDK applications do I need to buy a VS2008 Commercial License + DarkGDK Commercial License to sell my apps.??

Where is it?

I'd say yes, but I'd also check with Microsoft if the EULA that came with Visual Studio doesn't specify. I'm kind of wondering this myself with C#...

Yep, I stated this once. If you check MS Visual <language> Express faqs, you're free to use any of them commercially, there's no limitations!

I have an old EULA here, but it says:

I think it's not only about the game being free or not, you should need a commercial license if you make any money of it.

I've seen this question asked (and answered it) a bunch of times. TGC should make a sticky post with what you can and cannot do with a Freeware license (in a clearer way, not too "Lawyer's Language" as the EULA).

There (is/was) a .net version that was released in the past - now many are awaiting the release of the new one - I think the old one is not available anymore but I'm not sure. The new one is free, the old one you had to pay for... the new one like DarkGDK costs money when you want to sell or make money from your creation. That's when you buy the "commercial" license.

So DarkGDK for VB.Net? Not Yet.

VC++/GDK Question????

I have tried to comile my first GDK project. Results=Fantastic

my question is .... before I go into C++ and get some sort of a brain cancer, Can GDK "working side by side with microsoft products" export games to XBOX.

if yes ... I would appreciate it if you point in what direction i have to go.

I am a db/dbpro customer for years. And lately GDK. To be honest, the biggest issue with db/dbpro was the export to other OSs. If you guys fix that with GDK I am very confident TGC would take the market. And again this is my opinion.

No. You want XNA support I think - that allows you to code microsoft OS and XBOX... I think you can do that with DirectX and C# - I don't think C++ is part of that - but I don't know - If you want to make XBOX games - scope out the term "XNA PROGRAMMING" or something similiar on google or whatever.

My friends have started working on XNA few weeks ago. Until this moment I think TGC products out run it. Maybe because I have been using 'em for awhile.

My biggest worry of all time that TGC doesn't continue supporting there products. I think they should keep it up.

XBOX is not my favorite console. No console is my favorite really. I like PC since it never runs out of date. Give XBOX few more years and they will come out with something new.

The only reason I brought this is because as we all know BDPro is much easier to use "code wise" than the DarkGDK. The only reason I would see myself chasing time to learn DarkGDK is if it brought something new to the table. Or if DBPro is no longer supproted.

I understand there is few improvements on both FPS rates and the excutable size. But thit can be fixed if the TGC would compile new DBPro using C++ instead of VB. Not mentioning that DBpro owners wouldn't mind paying a little portion of the cost to upgrade to the new improved DBpro.

Again I am trying to figure out whats the deal before it's too late and I get left behind.

I paid good money for the enterprize edition of VS 2008. Why do I have to install the Express version to use the GDK?

I actually have the MSDN Enterprize subscription (which includes the enterprize editions of Visual Studio). I did a full install of VS.Net 2008 including VB.Net, and VC++ (even though I program in C# primarily).

I installed the Direct X SDK pointed to on the TGC web site. I then downloaded the Dark Game GDK. While installing the Dark Game GDK it told me the VC++ 2008 complier was required and could not be located. When I know *for a fact* that it was installed when I did my full installation of VS 2008...

Very likely because Dark GDK was designed to install with the free express version. The DGDK API will work with the enterprise version but you'll have no wizard to create the projects with their associated directories, linkages and beginning framework code.

RElax dude - it'll work - just not "easily" LOL - Lilith is right - the install was "coded" to work smooth with vs2008 as it was a bundle offering. you Might have to jump a few hoops - basically - I'd do this - (on a dud machine or whatever) Get the DarkGDK 2008 express "bundle of stuff" up and running and compiling a basic poly box cube or something. then Mimic in your pro/enterprise version the same linker file locations, compile switches etc.

I doubt you would be using any of the features over the Express edition anyway; except Profile Guided Optimizations, maybe.
