Hi Everybody
Now that my exams are over I'm now starting work on a new game - Arena.
Basically its a futuristic sport which takes place in an arena. the player has to go around dodging moving objects, and collecting items before the time runs out. Below are some screenshots which probably won't work so if you want to see the latest news, check out my site and click on 'Arena' on the left:
http://www.thegameszone.tk
Here is a pic of the first Arena (Made in JTEdit) , note it is still incomplete:

I might be able to upload a demo soon, but I'll work a bit more on it first. I'll put in another post with more screenshots when futher work is done.

I've just uploaded some new screenshots...tell me what you think.
Also, the game idea has changed slightly, I've edited my first post.

what are the rest of your system specs? ie. mhz and ram?
is it playable at 25 fps, or is that too fast?
what speed would you recommend I set?
I can get an average of 17-18 fps with 32mb graphics, 1.3 ghz and 256 ram.., which is Ok to play at.

ps. if the above link doesn't work - which seems to be the case for me so i don't know how MrTAToad downloaded it try copying and pastingthe link below into the address bar:

60FPS is ideal. If you get two screen syncs for every eye image, you ensure an image is still available if the eye and screen are out of sync.

~20 FPS

P4 1,7ghz
GF 4 440GO 64MB
512MB DDR 266mhz

what screen resolution is used?

just to tell: UT2k3 runs better at 1600x1200 ...

17fps is actually the threshold of static images > animation.

The game looks really good, keep it up.

thanks David
I think the reason why it runs pretty slowly is because i've ghosted nearly all the objects to collect - i'll try and turn ghosting off for them and then see what happens.

-The game runs on 640x480x16 - surely a bigger screen size uses up more video memory?

-I'll post again when i've put ghosting off

I've made a lot of progress on Arena now - I'll upload it again tommorow. Meanwhile, here are some new screenshots of the game/menu's. Speed can be increased a lot by selecting low graphics from the options menu - I then get ~27 FPS, which is quite smooth.

Uploading it all tommorow!

That's pretty good, but you have a good computer. There is now an option of low or high graphics - I can get about 30 fps now on 1.3 Ghz and 32mb Graphics. The download is available now - copy and paste the address below into the address bar.

Sorry about this - There seems to be a bit of trouble with the upload - I don't think you can download it yet. I'm trying to sort it out. Geocities
Does anyone know where I can upload a .zip file containing a .exe for free??
You can try going to this and then clicking on the link, but I don't think it will work.

Are you hiding the objects out of view, cos I get the same fps however many objects are on the screen (21fps)? Also that is the same demo that you uploaded before.

Hmm, noticed a couple problems, it looks like you're syncing after loading each object or loading the objects in the main loop or something so my suggestion is to only turn on sync after you've loaded them all which shall make it load that little bit more faster and stop the user from seeing everything loading.

I also wasn't sure how to play or show the FPS for that matter although I gather that shift is accelerate and the arrow keys are direction. Maybe some instructions would be useful.

Yes thanks for the feedback
there will be a loading screen, and the reason why the objects flash up is because i've put the sync on command after the objects loading part. Yes, it does not state the fps anymore, but does it run smoother now? - you can change the graphics settings in the options menu.
In the final version there will be instructions, but here are a few for now:

arrow keys: move
shift/control: move forward/backward

GAME MODES:
Normal: collect all the rings and cubes before time runs out
Time rush: start with 7 seconds, which decreases - collect a ring/cube and your time increases a little
race: got to the 'destinations' in as quick a time as possible - in the final version there will be opponents times too.

OK?

"17fps", you will have to support that theory with a link of information.

In all my years of animation Ive never heard that number suggested.

most cartoons are indeed 12 frames per second when created but they cheat by interpolating 2 frames 50% opacity in between each other cell.

winnie the poo was a classic example of this.

most of the manga cartoons use 1frame for slide wipes etc.. effectively reducing seconds of film to one cell.
