I want to install Linux Mandrake but still want to program in darkbasic. So I'm asking if that is possible. I'm working on a text based adventure now (my first game). So please answer my question quick because I can't wait to install Linux, because I alway's have problems with XP

XP is really not very good. The best of the M$ series was definately Windows 2000.

To my knowledge, DB wouldn't work under Linux because DirectX is a M$ creation. If there was Glide support though in DB... oh well.

do you know one. Or a Linux directX version.

I'm in a hub this way I can go on the internet, the computer that hosts the hub is under XP, if I install Linux does XP and network still work?

You're on a hub? Do you mean that the XP machine is your router and/or proxy server? I am positive that a Linux host will support XP and other non-Linux OS nodes (computers). The other way around should work as well, but I can't personally verify that.

DX for Linux? I highly doubt it.

mandrake 9.1 should have wine or winex installed which is a psuedo direct x emulator. compatability might not be 100% but I bet you could run it.

knoppix another distro of linux apparantly has wine also pre installed.

I don't think you have to: http://www.winehq.com/

The solution perhaps? I wanna try Linux with my next reinstall and see if DarkBasic works with the Wine thing.

I don't know if I'll like linux yet, but heck im gonna try.

I have Mandrake 9.1 and Dark Basic. I've tested it with wine and you can run DBC, but I don't know about the games. My 3D card doesn't have any drivers so it runs REALLY SLOOOOOOOOOOOW. :-d

yeah but you will have to recompile the core so most users wont have its power ... and most X-frees don't support 3D either ...

Actually the reason is that my card is a cheap accelerator that works great in windows but the drivers for linux are non-existant. I think if I get another card it'll work. If people can play Unreal Tournament 2003 in Linux, why can't you use Dark Basic?

The only problem is that wine seems to run things on some computers but not on others. You really don't have a way of knowing if it's gonna work. I've heard of people getting Half Life to work and I still cant get it right. Hope you get to run DB.

The difference is that a NATIVE Linux version of UT2K3 has been made, but there are no native Linux version of Dark Basic.
