1gb DDR2 800MHz ram for $35

Pentium D is a bit old, i would have suggested an AMD 4800 or Core 2 DUO 2140. The AMD X2 processors are extremely cheap, and pretty decent in their processing capacity. 1.8 GHz is sub par these days as well.

If you go and spend a load of money on an 8800GT, you will most likely experience some bottlenecking due to the CPU. I suggest to get another gig of ram. If you plan on running vista, 1gb just isn't enough, since vista uses 512mb of the ram, so that leaves you with 512mb of ram for X10 and other programs.

1GB RAM should be enough now, the main thing you need to upgrade is your CPU, i'd be looking at getting at least a Core 2 Duo 2.66 GHz, if I were you i'd go the whole hog and get the Q6600, i've got the QX6700, and it works beautifully with Vista.

As for a graphics card, don't get an 8600GT, i'd recommend getting at least an 8600GTS 512MB off www.mwave.com.au, I paid $230 for mine to use for my backup PC.

If it's still in its packaging you may be able to, if you've already installed the RAM, maybe if you're lucky, but if the CPU is already installed, no, since it'd be covered in paste.

Good luck with building your PC!

Reading some reviews on that processor you have, I think I have the same one. Many say that its overclockable to 3 + GHz.
