Hi Guys,

Thanks for your feedback on the related thread which called for an exhaustive list of requests for the FPSC X9 software. With the help of several forum users, we have now compiled the definitive list, and can reveal that number one on this list with a total of 49% of all votes calls for a 'Performance Increase' of the main engine. Whilst we understand that performance is a very specific problem based on what kind of PC you are running and the design of your levels, we do feel that there may be room to move in this area and we need your help to find it.

I am going to tackle the issues requested one by one, starting with performance, so if you have a stock media level that you feel should run faster on your PC, then zip up the FPM file and email to lee@thegamecreators.com. Also, if you feel the performance of FPSC is fine and I should move on to number two, then you are welcome to send me an email about that too. Bear in mind we cannot rewrite the engine and can only target specific areas of slowdown with code optimizations. You will not be getting a 200% speed increase overnight, but with your help we can identify and target areas within the engine we all agree should be faster.

Try to avoid asking for 100 characters running around a room, a zillion crates falling from the sky or 300 fps because your other games run that fast. Bear in mind FPSC is a generic game engine that has to handle whatever you throw at it, compile that level in a few minutes and let you play the result. High end games have a huge asset pipeline, including many pre-processing steps to achieve those attributes.

Ideally what I am after is a level you built with stock media, that when you enter a section of the level starts to slow down unreasonably based on the levels content on a decent PC. I need the level, a step by step guide on how to progress through the level and exactly what I should be looking for when the slowdown hits. The easier I can reproduce the issue, the quicker a fix can be found. Don't email any other feature requests at this time, or different bugs, just performance related issues for now. Also, only send an email with an issue if you can stick around to help me test the various beta versions of V108 as I will need to know if I have solved the speed issue for your particular case.

I will reveal the other requests shortly, but for now I thought it prudent to start collecting reproducable material for what amounts to a request from half the entire FPSC community - PERFORMANCE

Very nice Lee, best of luck improving the performance! I'll see what I can do to find a FPM file which has major slowdown, i'm sure I have at least one.

This might be a bit too much for a simple "update."
But some sort of timer based system would be awesome.

I promise to be careful and go really really slow I know you want me back in one piece (or at least my brain connected to my fingers). I will be working flat out to Saturday though, just to make up for time mis-spent!

Lee's doing something besides working on TGC projects! Call the police I personally think Lee needs a good break after all that X10 business, nasty stuff, making me all jealous of lucky people that can run it

Maybe you should stick to the bunny-hill, just for good measure I would hardly call a little break misspent though, I would sure want one in your shoes, I hope you make a living of all this TGC stuff. But who will answer my X10 questions in your absence Enjoy your vacation Lee

Well, I wish I could have sent you my last super ultra mega laggy level (That was only one 5x5 floor...) but I've deleted it long ago.

It was really easy to duplicate the problem, too! All you had to do was run it and there you go! 6 fps until you openned the vent door next to you.

Well, I'm sure everyone is appreciating the motivation to optimize FPSC X9, Lee! I wish you the best in your endeavors.

Oh, and if you're ever sitting there wondering "Why does THAT lag so much?" ... *coughscriptscough*

@LeeBamber,

Thankyou for your time looking into this matter. I see yourself or maybe some other member of TGC may have looked at one of my threads. If so or if not, I still thankyou for investigating a solution if possible to what I believe your post is referring to.
I like what you have proposed, as Im sure everyone can use the editor in many different ways.

EDIT: I plan to look into time available to forward a map with details.

Good luck with the research.
Thankyou again for your post.

V108 will fix performance only. Look for a public beta this weekend, per Lee. V108 is not the touted new version that will have some of X10's features. That's a whole different thing, and will probably be another version as opposed to an update.

Best.

1.08 Beta 3 Report:

-I noticed the whole beta sequence has a weird headshot issue when an enemy ducks away for your attacks behind something. Their heads do not count as headhots anymore.

-Culling System is a little bit bugged, as stated above it appears to remove them before they are off screen.

We need a real culling system that only draws stuff within a set distance. I would set mine to 1000 but for larger outdoor games it would be nice to be able to adjust or remove the feature.

that would be great, except that would look best with fog, you dont want everything a few metres away from you invisible... and speaking of fog, can we have proper fog instead of coloured walls? i turned fog on to hide flying buildings and noticed that all it does is colour in walls, floors and objects to whatever you set fog to... the n64 has better fog than fpsc

Is it possible that if you destroy an enemy he will leave more behind
than his weapon which you can pickup. Let say you needed a key to
open a door in the level, one of the enemies is carrying this key.
Killing this enemy he will leave behind this key his weapon and maybe
some health you need to continue.

@Changes: ive just installed v1.08 and the headshot dosnt kill instantly

From what I understand a shot to the head will make serious damage and not necessarily an instant kill.

Well I got that info from within the fpi script which stated:

desc = Instant On (and allow a headshot to cause serious damage)

However, I decided to test it and using a weapon with a scope to make sure I hit the head, it cause instant kill. I guess that is about as serious of "damage" one can get.

I haven't really had any serious problems so far with beta 4. However, when using the "Fantasy" characters I get a slow down from 37 fps to between 24 and 27 fps. It's not the characters themselves but the fpi scripts that come with them; e.g. minos1-slowfast.fpi. Other fpis, although they aren't specific to these characters, run ok with no slow-down. (using other fpis can really cause some funny results such as the character flopping around all over the place. maybe that's one way of getting a "ragdoll" effect -- just joking)

Addendum:

I modified the fpi because I didn't need it to do exactly what it was doing. However, it still slows things down to 32-35 from 37.

that's probably the level, not the mod.

and if you want to get rid of all traces of v.108, you need to uninstall the whole fpsc program
