Thanks guys! Remember, I'd love to see your levels! And thanks especially to Pricey for being the first to join my forum.

Ah, HFA: I'll grant you that it's a tricky game, but I did add some things to make it not so daunting. For example, there are checkpoints so that you don't need to restart from the beginning when you miss that tricky jump. There's also improved mid-air control, so if you feel that you're starting to miss a jump, you have a chance to correct it. Also, there's the option to turn the game speed down if you feel like you need to turtle your way through.

This really is a great game! I really liked the original, and I certainly think this is a good game. I really think sometimes when I play this game, that I'm playing the sequel to SkyRoads.

ideas... (maybe for next release)

make checkpoint dynamic so player has to remember to trigger it with a key press; sort of a quicksave type function.
make a random level generator that you can access from the sub-main menu (solar system pic menu). that way you could always play a new level. maybe add support to feed the RLG parameters such as difficulty, ambience, etc..
add a score counter.

don't get me wrong though. this is by far the most solid, enertaining game ive seen yet in DBC. but if you like my ideas, there is plenty more where they came from.

p.s. did i mention this game kicks ass???

Thank you much AgentSmith!

Hmm, I don't think I'd want to make the player hit a key to save: there's already a lot of stress trying to survive in some of the later levels - checkpoints come as a relief/treat.

Random levels would be indeed very cool (like F-Zero X), but would be very difficult to create so that they're not impossible or way too easy. I'll look into it though. Being able to always play new levels though is why I released SkyEdit.

What do you mean by RLG parameters? Ambience - as in light level? I assume these would apply to the random level generator.

But please, if you have more ideas, lemme know! Good ideas are always welcome (never know, I may incorporate some).

okay, i see your point in the extra key press.

i will make a RLG (Random Level Generator) if i have your permission. that way you can just #include my RLG.dba. id like to try and do it by just studying your level files, rather than you tell me the format (i like to reverse engineer things for the helluvit).

and yeah, by parameters i mean level settings like in your editor. by ambience i mean general surroundings; things like level style... 'fast and tedious' or more of a 'jump around at low speed between platforms' type level.

Heh, indeed you're on! If you can reverse-engineer my level format (don't worry, no encryption here save in 1 part), and you manage to make a decent random level loader, I'll definately include it! SkyEdit will be your friend in this: there's a lot to learn about the level format from just making a few levels with this to begin with.

Let me know if you need help.

Not necessarily. You have a variable-length string describing the background. Don't forget about the ever-important first few bytes also - they must be perfectly intact.

Solely alone. Me, myself, and I. No "borrowed" material either. Made the engine, all the routines without referencing others' works, the sounds, the music, the models, the graphics, the whole shabang.

Agent, I'm really impressed that you got it to be as functional as it is. Sure, it's primitive now, but it's still pretty fun, not to mention a good start!

I played about 8 random levels:
4 were actually quite fun
2 were really tedious
2 were physically impossible

Not bad at all for 3 hours!

Well, I now leave for my vacation, take it easy everybody, see you all in a week!

Yeah, much better! I thought you gave up...

These levels have a lot more variety, are more possible, and have some good long stretches instead of only randomly-placed blocks.

Here are some future challenges to you. If you could get these working reasonably well, you'll officially have godlike powers!
* Working tunnels that don't just end, have holes underneath, or have walls at the end.
* Special blocks.
* Decorations like clouds.
* Better variable gravity (100-1000 maybe); perhaps low gravity levels would have longer jumps.
* Atmosphere settings porportional to the level length and/or the distance between oxygen blocks/rings.
* Premade portions of track so that certain features could be added. Ie: warp gates, big L-corners, stairs, lava/oxygen pits, special jumps, ring jumps, variable level starting/ending types, safe places for checkpoints, etc...
* Oh yeah, level ends usually should have tunnels before them so that you don't miss the colission area.
* Different backgrounds besides "earth"

Hehe, I'm sorry if this sounds like complaining or demanding in any way. I think you've done some great work, work that I probably couldn't have done myself (or at least in the short amount of time you did it in). Yeah, I'm leaving tomorrow for awhile (almost a week), but don't hesitate to ask me for any help if you need it.
