No , you only need it if:-

1. you got the cash.
2. you realy want it and have the cash.

Dark Physics makes any hot drink go cold.

@ Mad Nightmare: No you don't need it, but then you only have the "Software-Mode" you can use!

If you want to use the "Hardware-Mode" then you have three options:
1. Buy a supported GeForce-graphics-card! (From G80 upwards!)
2. Buy a AGEIA/nVidia PhysX-card! (A graphics-card seems more useful!)
3. If you prefer AMD/ATI, then you have to wait for a "driver"-wrapper or something like that! (If it will ever be made, rumours have been in the net that someone made such a thing, but no proofs were shown by him as far as I know!)

I hope that helped!

Indeed it isn't necessary to have a Physx processor to use the Dark Physics.

ATI and Nvidia is under discussion for the use of Physx.

Regarding the PPU the bench are questionable given that his driver has not been updated while the GPU has been heavily optimized. Nvidia's interest to convince them that its solution GPU is the most effective, and they do what they can to.

Is BFG GeForce 8800 GT 512MB PCIe Video Card a good choice?

When it is too complicated it is because you are trying at the wrong door.
