You dont know much about texture size's and there limits do you?
*sigh* let me explain, a 512x512 texture will hold less pixels; thus meaning less detail, and game-creators strive to realism, even if you're game/project aint meant to be, we should still strive for realism.
However using a 1024x1024 will still render fast as a 512x512, but be a few milliseconds slower, depending on the rendering engine that is.
Also let me show you this image using a 2048x2048(dont call me crazy neither.)

As you can see, the magazine(cyllinder.) under the actual gun is high resoultion, and lots of detail is packed into it...(still need to work on it a little so dont say "too scratchy" =|.)
And the gun itself has a 1024x1024, and its much blurrier then the magazine, and not to mention, that 1024x1024 was done by a proffesinal texture artist known as
Millenia.
Maybe you wish to look at his other Submissons and see how brilliant they are. and i`m just a pawn at texturing, yet however my 2048x2048 has beaten his 1024x1024, for the reason that higher the texture resolution, the more detail it can pack in.
and you know what, the weapon is on a W_model(world model.) meaning that its the gun you view when a player holds it in third person. however it comes out higher res in V_model mode(view model, which is FPS mode.)
So it even has MIP_Mapping which is lowering its resolution to the models file settings.
Now you may be thinking, that made no sense, it depends on the artist... Well you're right it does depend on the artist, but the artist is dependant on the size aswell as his skills, small size's mean less detail and more blur.
Also that 2048x2048 didnt lag the game by 1 fps. it still stayed at the average frame rate that I get on CS_aztec in DirectX 9 mode.
Basicly, the bigger it is, the less blurrier it is and the more detail that can be packed in.
(sorry that this post is long >_<.)
