a Soharix production

We are here to welcome back the well known and loved Marvin, he has been siting around gathering up all kinds of dust. We have decided to bring him back out from hiding and finish him.

OLD THREAD: http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=119297&b=8

Soharix Members working on MTM

Cowbox- Orginal Programmer
Crazy Programmer- Lead Programmer
DeathHead - Modeler

Some ingame screen-shots follow:

On top of the world

Icy Land

The Cows

The Mushroom Squad

Ingame:
Ingame you operate the moment of Marvin the Magician using by default WASD movement and the mouse for camera rotation. Marvin can shoot enemies, gain money from them which he can use to buy better staffs and necklaces (the necklaces currently don't do anything but will increase things like attack speed and movement speed.) Marvin can also buy special items such as keys but they cost quite a bit and you'd be just as well to go and find the secret area where the item is hidden. Marvin can walk around freely on the landscape, he can jump on anything low enough (he can jump straight onto small trees) and he can pick up health and mana bottles to restore the use of hitpoints in battle and mana when using secondry spells (the secondry spells haven't yet been made but will do more damage, at the cost of mana, than the normal primary spell does.)

Points for this WIP:
Done:
- Movement including jumping
- Enemies and respawning
- Attacking
- Inventory system with buyables from the general store
- NPC-to-player (text) conversations
- Health and mana pickups
- Extra items such as keys for doors (currently only one at the moment though)
- Full camera movement

Working on:
- More enemies
- More of the first map
- Enemy AI
- Functionality for the necklaces

We should be/will be doing:
- More NPCs
- More enemies
- Other lands
- Secondry spells

Programs and techniques used:
Programming and 3D engine: Dark BASIC Professional
Maps and models: Deled LITE
Textures: Gimp, Paint and Microsoft Office Picture Manager

The game has toggleable shadow shading, on the main character and his staff, to allow for extra effect and to ease jumping.
The game also has cell shading, or cartoon shading on the main character, his staff, the NPCs and the enemies to give the game that cartoony edge and happy game-like feeling.
The controls should also be editable to users preference.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We will be working first on improving the spells, armor, and inventory system. We have a quite large area to be playing around with adding Monsters, NPCs etc. The goal as of now is to make MTM more complex but still fun to play.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

For the record, this WIP is official, just not started by me. So don't worry people, Crazy Programmer isn't stealing my work, I just gave it to him to continue under my supervision.

Those cave ones look to have a very intriguing style to them, though I can't say for sure why. It may be the restrictive bridge and ledge within a very big feeling tunnel, or the rather nicely fitting textures.

@Cowbox: I'm not sure if you interpreted me as sarcastic there, but for record, I do like this. If you want to take a platforming slant on it, here's a sort-of idea: Looking through cave, and Side-View. Of course you'd probably want to shake it up a little more than this rushed-off example. Good luck!

Na don't worry I was taking you seriously, I was just telling you the real truth as to why the cave looks how it does. Hehe

I would have gotten it to the style in those 2 pictures, I just closed MTM before I finished the cave.

However, it will be Crazy Programmer's job to finish the cave as I'm not actually working on MTM (Rebirth).

I will be working on the models later on in the development.

For now i will be working on the inventory system, and how items effect Marvin and his magic.

The three main items that will effect Marvin will be his necklace, his robe, and his staff. These items will be bundled up in what we will call an Armor Set, so it will only take up one inventory slot. The best armor sets will be found in secret spots on the map that you will have to explore to find. Others will be bought from the store and dropped from monsters.

This is a new screen of how the inventory is going to look.

The top three slots are going to be the main item slots such as Potions, Armor set, and keys.
The six slots are going to be extra items.

You will never be able to hold more than 3 keys at a time or more more than 3 of each potion. You will also only be able to pick up 1 armor set at a time. Once you choose to pick up another the one you are using is destroyed.

Here is a spider that will be going in the cave i am working on, the cave is complete but i have to work out a texture problem. The texture appears to be stretched. Also i think this spider can(could) pass for an ant. I will remove the fangs and re-texture it and see how that turns out. Also the spider is animated.

Here is just a little christmas spirit in Frosty Land.

I am glad to see this up and running again! WTG guys! I helped Cowbox out a bit on the first version of this game, I am pleased to see others working with it as well.

Were you guys able to get the sparky's collision bug straightened out?

One day you will fight the fine fight.

Heh, a lot's changed since the first MTM, I'd love to chat about it all on MSN, but you've not been on in aaaages. Nevertheless, here are the main pointers:
1. The Sparky's bug was fixed in Vision (by scaling everything to 10%)
2. All the timer based movement problems have been eradicated.
3. I now have a fully working engine that I can adapt to make any game engine (finally) and it all started with the MTM engine you did for me. - So I thank you for that, but it has been updated and perfected heavily.

Soharix is currently doing 3 major projects:
1. Which is showcased to individuals (so if you go on MSN again I'll probably give you the link to it)
2. Which is this one. (Marvin the Magician (Rebirth))
3. Which is a sidetrack project from the first one to keep myself motivated and may never actually get finished or even showcased for that matter. (But you never know.)

All 3 should be good, and it's almost certain Soharix will finish & release at least one one of them.

@CB - That is great news! And yes, it has been a very long time.

I was doing some reading this morning and noticed that Paul updated Sparky's collision to fix that very bug that we discovered with the original MTM. I am glad that he fixed that as I am sure other developers would eventually spend countless hours trying to figure out what was going on

I am glad to hear you finally got this to be timer based. That was one of the major changes that really needed to be addressed. I will be on MSN sometime!

Peace!

One day you will fight the fine fight.

Yeh Paul made the fix because I asked him to, but then I tried it and it just didn't work at all... so I used the old 10% method.

And as for the timer based movement, I've still not done it, I've just overcome the need to.

I prefer the old Marvin - a lot cuter and not as 'spindly'. Fits in with the overall look of the game. Not sure what you could do with him animation-wise though. . .could maybe make him bounce or produce foot from under his robe that he can tap when impatient, etc.

Glad to see this game back

Yes, as I have animated him, and now I await further response from Crazy so you can't see the animation till I send it to him. But yes the animation is quite varied, except the fact that the death will be probably repeat itself, but till further response from Crazy I will add another death anim.

Here is the demo http://www.mediafire.com/?my3rymmzdmh
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Edit: I know the cow does not point the right way when hes attacking. I forgot to Yrotate him before the demo was uploaded.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
WASD: Movement
Ctrl: Shoots Magic
Left Click: Opens doors once you have found the keys
Camera is controlled by the mouse.

If your system gives you an error it might be because your computer cant support the cartoon shading or the shadows. So go to options and turn them off.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I am working to complete another map which will be a supprise
While in the process i will be re-coding the Map Editor and working on Game-Play such as. Three new spells, spell effects, greater types of defence and damage.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Enjoy
Soharix
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Edit: Having troubles with the up-load, hold on.
Edit: Link Works
The skysphere isn't animated, it's just a textured sphere that rotates gradually.
(I don't know if Crazy Programmer intends to do anything with the skysphere or not, but it's been like that for as long as I can remember the project. )
You should persuade Crazy Programmer to set the sync rate to 60, because this will hold your game at a steady FPS and won't be influenced by any Flash animations that are running. (I've found these make you're FPS run at a higher rate.)
Yeah, maybe I should. Because I run a real monster for laptop, and it would be a pain if I could not play this game because it has too much power, lol.
So, Crazy Programer, please set the sync rate to 60, so I can meet Marvin again .
Ok, tried it out after putting all the downloads together.
Its pretty nice and runs at a high fps but a few tips:
- Work more on the camera control, its kind of annoying
- Animate him
- Just polish everything more and more until its just perfect
But really cool.
