an experienced animator with reactor can produce similar softbody results. And newtek still have ALOT to learn from Alias and Avid on the animation front of development.

@Raven,
If soo much people should lern from alias, then why are you using 3dsmax 5?(is it Legal?)
Why dont you turn to the side of the people that dont have to lern from the others?

LW [7.5] has softbody but it takes some effort to tweak, no hardbody but that can be faked and bone-setup and tweaking is frustrating (jumping back and fourth between modeller and layout) at best.
LW [8] looks like a really good buy in those departments. I'm with FroggermonSSE, I'm defenetly gonna upgrade this fall.

ToiletFreak:
There was a mock-up of the coming LW [8] UI but they are still arguing at NewTek about it. But here is what LW [7.5] looks like (with my own button and windows-configuration) original.

The Modeller.

The Layout.

The modeller and layout is two separate programs communication wia the "hub", a small background-program. One thing some LW-users hoiped for was that modeller and layout could merge into one, making it less of an hassle to go back and fourth. I personally like them being separate; it helps you concentrate on your modelling.

Oh, yeah, another cool thing in LW [8]: Bones can be added to all kinds of dynamics with just a right-click. I used to think LW was a full, now I love it! Wouldn't wanna part with it. (Thankfully I don't have to.)

If you wanna know how good modeling can get in Lightwave,I suggest going to Newtek.com tutorials and search for user-delta's timelapses...They're just great, the guy models a head in a few short steps using extrude, spinquads and drag/move...That's it.

Raven:He thinks you're Vprime...Funny hein?...Well in a klownesque kinda way.

If I've seen it all before, why's this bus taking me back again? @_@

"an experienced animator with reactor can produce similar softbody results. And newtek still have ALOT to learn from Alias and Avid on the animation front of development." -raven

although this is true its nice to longer have to manually build bricks and fracture lines just to shatter something. Also, realistic cloth tearing is very difficult to do. Even an experienced animator using max+reactor or maya would have a bitch of a time.

Yes, everything is becoming much more maya like.

and Maya is still trying to catch up with Softimage|XSI w/Behaviour
Although i doubt many here have tried Reactor 1.3 or that new Dynamics engine (think the codename is Carbon on sparks)

has realtime booleans in operation for it... but to be honest i don't like it - Discreet fail quite spectacularly at polygon sub-division & editing. Although thier extruding abilities are pretty much the best, when it comes to cutting things up they still can't even accomplish the basics.

Just use the 3D program your comfortable. Doesn't matter which is better but the question is :which one do you know better? And with todays technology, you don't need to know so many 3d programs. Check out www.kaydara.com , you can get the FBX plug-in for all the highend 3d programs that will translate all models and animation between each other. Maya to 3dMax to Lightwave to XSI... It's not what 3d program you use but what you make with your 3d program....

Yep,it's great that these software companies now provide evaluation/free copies so everyone can experience Maya's incredible render/animation system and XSi's impressive subdivision surfaces and both software's robust and complete polymesh tools...

For my part,I'm a Softimager now,I've been officially and totally brainwashed...I still use Gmax though and have implemented the Meshtools script.LOL!My copy of Gmax has become a super-Nendo/Wings.Who said that workflow/method wasn't good?

As far as free versions are concerned...I wouldn't suggest Maya PLE just because the Watermark is Much more obvious and annoying than Xsi's...In fact,it's watermark(xsi) is almost only noticeable on render and even that not much ...I'll show later.
