...the lasers don't really look any different.

i defiantly think you should make the explosions look more 3D. they look way to flat. i would suggest adding a darker yellow were shadows would fall on it. to give it a more 3D look... im thinking more in a depth idea. like choose a center point and then not gradient but just put a darker yellow there (at least see how it looks)

Quote: "I like how the alien ship crashing causes nearby humans to die, in the explosion."

*Hugs Keith* You noticed!! That took ages to get looking how I wanted, and it's such a tiny detail. yay.

Quote: "Man, this is so cool. How many lines of code are you at? "

Um.. 2000, but that's including about 500 lines setting up all the various TYPES and whatnot, so realistically about 1500 of actual game code. Pretty compact!

Quote: "the lasers don't really look any different. "

It's an issue that's getting sorted. Sometimes the angle they're on means that you don't see the 1pixel thick white line down the middle. I'm going to make the white line a little thicker and that should fix it.

Quote: "i defiantly think you should make the explosions look more 3D. they look way to flat. i would suggest adding a darker yellow were shadows would fall on it. to give it a more 3D look... im thinking more in a depth idea. like choose a center point and then not gradient but just put a darker yellow there (at least see how it looks)"

I'm not entirely sure what you mean. The explosions are 3D. They're solid meshes. If you look at the old posts where they're flat plains you'll see the difference. I did initially have these new ones shaded, but it makes them look a bit wrong. I think it's because drawing shade onto them means that the angle isn't always correct when they're pointing at the camera. Have you checked the new video, I'm just not entirely sure if you're talking about the latest explosions!

Thanks for the crit though guys... more updates coming soon!

I like the current explosions, but I think they need a bit more to them. I recommend having it grow from nothing VERY quickly before shrinking back, rather than just appearing like it does now. Also, are you planning to add more variation to the city? Mostly I ask because right now it's either suburbs or skyscrapers in a grid pattern, and the more variation the finial product has in the land scape, the more fun it will be to destroy and play around in.

@Bizar Guy

I agree about the size of the explosions. As you might see from the picture higher up, I'm going to add smoke trails as well as the yellow "bang". I'm thinking you could be right, a scale up before the scale down would probably be more effective.

With regards to the buildings/layout. I definately want to make the city more diverse, different houses, buildings and so on, infact I want to add windows to the skyscrapers too! Lets just call these placemarkers for a minute. I'm really focussing in on the characters and AI and so on at the moment. Once all that is in place I'll start looking into making the city a little be more varied. I'm actually thinking the map should spread out into quite a rural looking area with very few houses, and trees, and maybe the odd gas stop, although I like the idea of playing to the fact its "just a game", so if a character runs of the edge of the map, they just wall into the nothingness below!!

Thanks for the feedback.

I think Bizar Guy's suggestion about having the explosions expand very rapidly, rather than appearing full-size, makes a lot of sense. In fact, perhaps rather than have them appear full-size and then shrink, it would look better to have them appear very small, expand to full-size very quickly, and then fade, not shrink at all. I don't know if this is possible though, or whether it would look good. The addition of the smoke parts will probably help a lot. But I don't think that explosion model looks quite right shrinking after it's appeared.

Either way, it's better than the 2D explosion that was there before!

My only other comment is not game-related: don't move the camera so quickly all the time in the video! It makes it hard to appreciate everything fully.

Everything else looks great. The giant robots firing all those explosions are awesome in every sense of the word.

I wonder how the player interacts with the action.

I suggest you take the Halo route, and give the alien vehicles differently coloured explosions (blue works pretty well), just to add a bit of difference there. Also, smoke, or blue energy particles escaping in the same way as it does on the helicopters might add a little more mayhem.

Bizar Guy has a point considering variety. Are buildings destroyable? Oh, and will there be civilian vehicles that do BOOM! as well?

If you kill this one off, I will dedicate my life to building one of those alien bots to have you smashed, shot and tasered. In that particular order. This is, bluntly said, awesome. Although I've got no clue what the actual gameplay will be, zooming around the city like this is amusing in itself.

i think adding smoke to the explosions would add to it. and as it shrinks or fades away the smoke replaces it.

ok so watching the video its not as bad as the picture... but its still rather flat. it really depends on the angle... because the angle in the picture the video link is in makes it look 2D. but the video makes it look almost 2.5D

an example of what i mean http://www.xgaming.com/newsletter/2006/supermario2.5D.jpg(....a bad example but it works)

i think a way to fix this would be to add more points going out ward in each direction at more of an angle.

-i'll edit this in a little bit with a picture of what i mean-

Wow. Thanks guys. I think that might be the most feedback I've ever recieved... this might take a while...

Quote: "i was kinda dissapointed that you stopped "Grand Theft Retro" but now that i look at these updates/screenshots I'm Not!"

LOL. I just figured I was never going to outshine GTA and that it might be better to try something more original.

@Plotinus
I'm going to go back and work on the explosions, I think expand then fade might be the way forward. It's a case of finding a middle ground between something that looks good and is FPS efficient!

And I'm sorry about the camera movement. I'll try and be less shaky in future!

@Ron Erickson
I think I will definately need some help. I've been running into problems between the code that performs limb rotations and the animation code. I occasionally get some very irratic results. It might just be that I'm not used to enhanced anim. I'm actually going to do a separate mini-game to learn how to use it propperly, before I put it into the game propperly.
Thanks for the offer of help though... will you check back here, or should I email?

Quote: "solid effort in the AI as well as graphic.

I wonder how the player interacts with the action."

Thanks. It was a stylistic choice. I don't think DB is really built to handle all these sexy new shaders, and you have to sacrafice alot for the sake of something that looks "nextgen". I thought it would be fun to take it back to something different. I've been playing alot of megadrive/mastersystem games recently, and thats where the inspiration came from.
I have no idea for a new name yet! I might start a geekchat post for it! But not until it's done!

Quote: "I suggest you take the Halo route, and give the alien vehicles differently coloured explosions."

I'd considered that, and I think you're right. There's a post-it on the monitor saying "make massive aliens have blue explosions & add red particles to alien ship lasers". So that is all on the way... no fear!

Quote: "Bizar Guy has a point considering variety. Are buildings destroyable? Oh, and will there be civilian vehicles that do BOOM! as well?"

As I said, there will be a much greater variety of buildings. The current ones are just place markers until the gameplay is wired. The buildings are totally destroyable. It will be possible to completely level the map. I'm wondering about civilian cars. I think it's a possibility. The only issue with that is that if there are civilian cars then I've just gotta let the player drive them, and that might spoil some other areas ofthe gameplay!!

Quote: "If you kill this one off, I will dedicate my life to building one of those alien bots to have you smashed, shot and tasered."

I'm actually building this for a competition, which deadlines in August, so it's gotta get finished! I have the blueprints for the robot somewhere, hold on I'll digit out... you will need a flux generator, which is relativelyhard to come by if you don't live on zargle5.

@Azunaki
Now I know what you mean. I think the updated explosions with expand, fade and smoke will be much more pleasing. I really appreciate the effort you went to to describe it though. Getting spikes to appear on the front is a bit of a nightmare, because the way the objects are shaded means they don't want to display geometry pointing straight at the camera.

I know there have been 2 or 3 posts recently that are asking about the gameplay. So, here's the Lowdown:

The game is a 3rd person sandbox action title. It's based on those games you used to play as a child, where all the different toys you had would have battles, you know.... lego VS GIJoe VS teddys etc.

In Survival Mode you play as an unarmed civilian, you have to guide other civilians to "Safe Zones" around the map, there is an overall population in the map, and you must rescue a certian percentage before they are killed/zombified etc.

In Toy Box mode you can select the number of baddies, the size ofthe city, and what you want to be (alien, human, zombie, trifid, whatever you like). Then you start up the game, and it randomly generates objectives for you to complete.

Oh, and just as a heads up... all the audio in the game is created orally!

HAHa.

Thank you for the continued interest guys!

I'm still trawling on with this, I've been on a assets making mission, and doing alot of animating, for things like zombies, and making a godzilla. Nothing really new to Show in DB, and I didn't want to wash this thread in pointless updates.

With regards to a demo...hmm.

Right now there isn't even a player character. I mean, I could put something out right now, but you'd only be able to fly around.

I am, to be honest, a little nervous of putting stuff out there. Im not very thick skinned, and I'd be really gutted if I put something out too early and it got slated!

I promise you'll get a demo soon!

Anyway.... thanks for keeping this thread alive. I'll post some updates soon.

Over and out.

For what it is worth, I would love to just fly around, since it would give a feel of how the game would look and feel like in general. Of course, that is just me being desperate to see something in action, this project is awesome so far, lol .

Looking very good. I have one off-topic question - what happened to the family-friendly stuff? I thought you had gone down the non-violence route a while back? Are you taking a different direction again?

You say "faces are still to come" but I think they look great without faces, gives them a certain toyish charm, even if they are blowing bits out of each other .

I agree with OBese87, I think you'd kill the cool cartoon toy style if you add faces. Maybe add emote cartoon bubbles to show emotions and facial expressions would be more appropriate.

i think it would depend on the amount of detail and style to the faces. it wouldn't ruin it if he kept to the cartoon style.

Thanks, I think! I'm not trying to be KillZone2. THe graphics are exactly how I want them. Bump maps and bloom would look stupid in this kind of thing!

Cheers BV, the non violent games are my work, this is a personal project. Unfortunately I don't really have an rights to the games I produce for work, otherwise I would totally post them here, which means that for the minute, only the violent stuff is on here.

I think it's not GTR anymore, but I couldn't tell you what on earth it is now!!
I think you're right, the faces should stay how they are. I do REALLY like the idea of speech bubbles. The only issue is making enough of them that you don't get pissed with seeing the same speech bubble every 5 minutes.... that's supposing that this is actually good enough that you play it for more than 5 minutes..

Maybe just mouths when they're screaming? And big wide eyes when they're scared? Maybe the zombies have "toothy" mouths?

Still really basic, not more detail than say, a lego face.

That sounds like a wicked insult. "OI. YOU. Yeah you, Lego Face. Lets fight"

Aliens...giant robots...zombies? This is the greatest game ever!!

Keep up the excellent work.

Have you ever played XIII for the PS2? I see you want to add 'comic' sound effects to some of your action. I liked how XIII made it look like you we're flipping through a comic book.

don't forget trifids. And OAPS.

I like the idea of using text for some of the sounds, but like speech bubbles, there are so many explosions, screams, shots and so on on the screen at once that I think the "Text Sounds" could quickly get annoying and repetitive. Maybe there can be an option to turn it on or off?

well, you might have missed the post about this earlier, but all the sounds in the game are going to be done by mouth. So, hopefully it will have that feeling of when you were a kid and you would do all the gun and explosion sounds for your GIjoes. I have a connection to beardyman (youtube him) who I'm hoping will do the sound for the game.

Sounds good to me. An alternative is to develop some sort of intelligent system to determine when text should be shown, and that it does not show too much. That might be hard, though, I don´t know, lol.

You could make the text random, or just make it appear every other explosion and what not. It would be interesting it you made the text appear based on how much destruction it caused (ex. amount of deaths), kinda what Mr Z suggested.
