I watched it all on youtube tonight. I had never heard of red dwarf before you posted this. Not sure if I like it or not, but it was pretty good. Humor was a bit dry, but I laughed a few times. The storyline wasn't too bad either

EDIT: I was just watching some of the older stuff. It was much better

Mixed feelings. Wasn't too bad. There were a few chuckle moments, but it wasn't anything like the old skool stuff.

New CGI is terrible. I have every single episode on DVD and not once have such bad effects been in place except where it's intentional to be funny. It's awful, the movement is unnatural, everything looks like it was made from PVC and it's obvious when a proper prop comes in because the lighting is right.

The plot's decent and the humour is there though. It felt short.

I liked the new episodes (though I missed the third part), but they didn't feel right, the older stuff is better, I watched a couple of episodes of them last night for comparison, I think the episode where they hallucinate into thinking Red Dwarf is a video game was quite a good one.

Though I still liked them.

If you missed a part (I did) it's all on YouTube.

The reason its all CGI is because the company offered to do it for free, and with Dave being the ones who funded it they had a very tight budget.

This is no-where near as good as the old Red Dwarf episodes

They could have at least put a laugh track in, otherwise it's nothing like the old Dwarf.

I was pretty disappointed with it, there's no sets, and even the scutters are CGI. Badly CGI'd at that.

I watched a few episodes of the old series yesterday, and the laugh track was something I thought it could go without. I know it's a sci-fi comedy, but adding in the laugh track makes it cheesy and gives it a more low budget feel. It's like the creators are saying, "We know you can't laugh on your own, so we'll help." But that's how I feel about all laugh tracks on all sitcoms. Maybe except Sienfield and Raymond.

Well, isn't the laugh track meant to make you laugh? I once read a study in which it was found that if you're on your own, you don't laugh easily. If you're with others of the same sex, you laugh a bit. If you're with members of the other sex, you laugh a bit more.

Laughing tracks get on my nerves, most programs have them at bits I don't find funny. It seems to say 'haha, funny, look it's a joke', when I know I have the intelligence to recognise a joke and decide for myself when something is funny.

For example, in Monty Python's 'And Now For Something Completely Different' (no laughing track), I laughed more than in their flying Circus (laughing track), even on sketches that a in both or at least I found it to be more enjoyable without having the laughing in the background.

I believe it's called "Canned laugher". And now you may continue the discussion ...

Thing is, in the earlier episodes I think it was done in front of a live audience. It wasn't always "canned", sometimes it was just "recorded".

I missed the canned laughter, I must admit. While it does get on my nerves a bit, I don't think Red Dwarf is a laugh out loud comedy. I think it's a "quietly chuckle to yourself here and there" type comedy. The canned laughter helps fill in the atmosphere.

I agree it makes programs seem cheap, but Red Dwarf IS cheap. I dont know if it had a large budget, but it's always looked tacky. That's part of it's appeal. So I don't think the canned laughter is out of place, personally.
