OK, I get the basic stuff like print.

But all of these models and stuff are just too much!

Where do you get them all? Can you just make them with Dark Basic, or what? How hard is that going to be for me to do?

Seems like a lot of stuff.

new girl the models are made and exported from 3d packages.

the 3d models are shaped with polygons and vertices and wrapped with textures then saved out as either a textfile describing the model shape or as a binary file thats nothing different except for its exportations final result. Im talking about x files here which is one 3d format.

You can make primitives in db to build up models and save them as a mesh or seperate object but thats best left for later on in your coding and 3d modelling practises.

there is a cheap program we all use called milkshape. Its a great little package for what its worth as it has a tonne of options to help you import and export a variety of model types. 3dcanvas is another package thats good for a budget but may run slow on a 500mhz and lower.

a limb in db is very similar to a model with seperate 3d shapes forming the model, imagine your arm broken down into parts hand/forearm/uppperarm. this is the first method i would work with to get started. Later on you will want to make one mesh or object and using bones and creases you can bend the one model to look like its animated.

umm yeah thats a start, theres a lot of information to learn about 3d modeling and theres a few main steps you should consider practiseing

design and illustration : draw your ideas before u design something so you can use these references to model with

modelling : the fine art of creating polygons and vertices into one or more meshes to acheive the shape.

boning : adding bones and assigning meshes or vertices to the bone heirachy

texturing / uvwrapping : flattening the model out like a cardboard box so you can apply a texture to the models visible polygons or faces.

animation : moving the bones or model parts to acheive an animated sequence

i hope that helps as a start.

if you have DB classic then you will have a load of models already, look in the media folder in the DB install, there are also some (but not as many) in the media folder of Pro, if you want more models then google for them, loads of sites out there specialise on making models and often have models you can download (but check copyright if you intend to release a title), cheers.

enjoy!

What 3D "packages" should I use? You guys throw a lot of names around with the other forums like 3d forum.

Two programs that work well together are milkshape3d and characterfx(for bone animation). If your going to buy then go for milkshape, otherwise and if you dont need to animate, get anim8or. But with anim8or be sure to find LithiumUnwrapper (search in google or somewhere) - its a free texturing tool because anim8or is not very good at it.

Be aware that anim8or does animate, but it cannot export animated models into any format that DB uses. So you cannot make animated models for use with DB.
