Hi chaps,

finally finished my entry for dominance war 4 and this year, submitted in time!

for those who aren't sure what dominance war is, it's an annual game art competition between many popular art forums such as cgsociety, polycount, 3dtotal and so on, heres the link if you want to know more:

http://www.dominancewar.com

This year i wanted to push myself to do something i had never done before, something i was unfamiliar with, something which required me to stick to a different work flow which i hope to stick with from now on. I learnt an absolutely huge amount from the development of this year's entry, and i'm hoping everyone likes what they see.

Enough chatter, here is the final beauty shot for my character, V'HULCREM-KR

The original thread over at polycount:
http://boards.polycount.net/showthread.php?t=61632

Entry page including all required images for the character:
http://www.gameartisans.org/contests/dw/4/view_entries/finals_1_387.html

Let me know what you think.

edit:

and yes, back to work on the fantasy pack!

Absolutely incredible Jon! I would love to see a wire on that if possible. And you should release sub-d modeling tutorial sometime, your work is incredible. Good stuff!

You mentioned you changed your workflow a bit, would you mind outlining what your personal workflow is now?

For some reason it says I "don't have access" to that gameartisians page.

Anyway, I saw the wires and the whole process in the polycount thread. Cool beans.

So when will you know what place you got?

Thanks for the kind words.

@ Sid

the problem was last year i didnt really model everything on the high poly, i was getting away with stuff that i could easily just filter instead of spending the time to model it.

I spent most of the time on this character making the high resolution model, this is how its normally supposed to be done, but last year i just wasn't as confident in my modeling abilities. (looking at any high poly model you can easily get a daunting feeling of the amount of time needed to spend on it)

This got me out of sculpting completely, and forced me to exercise one of my weaker skills, the end result i am very proud of, and now i feel like modeling every little piece, nook and cranny for future normal mapped models.

I'm glad everyone likes it!

edit:

i also learned how damned important ambient occlusion can be, visually.

Incredible work, Jon!

I'm really loving the texture painting style you've settled into. That pic looks almost like an oil painting to me.

You really ought to come stateside and work for Blizzard!

@Jon- This is not a request, but a demand. You must put all of your Dominance War characters in a video doing their animations, that would be slick and awesome.

The mesh is awesome, but what has me completely gobsmacked is the texture! I can't even begin to contemplate how you managed that!

Thanks everyone for the support, alot of people seem to be saying it looks like a concept, im not really seeing this (probably because I've been staring at this model for 2 months so my mind doesn't want me to.) but i'll take it as a compliment, heh.

@ errant

Thanks, yeah that would happen to be my goal, to one day work at blizzard, just love their work. Judging by the amount of fan art they get i'd assume the 'queue' is fairly damn long.

One day, heh.

I'm back to finishing the animations of the weapons for the fantasy pack, got a fair bit left to do but will hopefully be done sometime soon, then i will get a badass video up.

I think they get the concept idea from it looking slightly like it was painted in photoshop. I can see it, but just a little bit. It's just how the texture's are, but I still think the texture's are awesome and exactly what the model needed. It's just a style, nothing's wrong with it.

Beautiful design all around, and top notch texturing as usual! I don't know how you come up with these designs out of thin air. I love how he still looks powerful, but you resisted the cliche of making him uber bulked-up.

Quote: "That pic looks almost like an oil painting to me. "

And that is the only gripe I can think of. At first I thought I was looking at your concept art. Maybe it's just the render settings and lighting that are flattening things out, but it screams 2D to me. I would love to see a different lighting setup that emphasises the 3D more.

Congratulations on finishing, definitely a contender!

Incredible work.
I love it.
I might agree with bond about the render though. I went through the entire WIP thread, and seeing how the model gradually came together, I kind of prefered some of the earier renders, where it looked more "real" and less painted.
Just amazing though. Me and my housemate were comparing MP5 with this, and its a truly impressive progression you've made.

I prefer it the way it looks now; I think it really fits the character and makes the render sort of stand out.

I think MP5 was a bit rushed tbh. His standard of work improved from that day.

We've seen epic elites, freakish monsters and awesome Dominance War entries.

If the word "Quality" would of been made today, it would of been made in your favor Jon, great work. Like how you did the hard surface, and the overall originality of the model, I'm well speechless at the results, I still remember the Rude gun over at polycount.. Um.. Well lets justs say the P*n*s Cannon.

Yep, I'm fairly certain that's how it works, especially considering they don't have any top 10, top 3, etc. winners posted yet.
