Hi there, just wondering is it possible to exceed the 256x256 limit on skins for characters?

The textures look so blocky up close. Ive seen some models use 512x512 textures, but I thought graphics cards had a 256 limit.

Not since the days of the Voodoo2 etc - I often use 512x512 textures, in fact most matrices that are used properly, opt for 1024x1024 or above so several tiles can be used.

You will feel a performance hit though, so perhaps keeping half res copies too for lower spec machines is a nice idea. It also keeps developments fluid if your program compiles and loads faster, there's nothing worse than having a delay before you can see if that miniscule change you made fixes the bug.
