i have almost every one of my files in the same directory, no subfolders.
not entirely true, I still have over 14 thousand folders, but most are old.

It is very hard finding files. once they get over a month old, they descend into the auto-arrange black hole never to be found.

27,694 Files 1,898 Folders on my external. Internal + external = 300 GB space used.

I'm curious who here is using the most space. . . anyone using over 500 GB of their computer/external?

You can tell it's geek culture when we're playing 'my hard drive is bigger than yours", I am sure this is geek dirt talk.

I'll have to whip my external out later and compare it to merit my mockery.

yup it is.

Quote: "I had 700Gb of files at one point but I slimmed down."
my computer doesn't even have that space...
most of my files are either python or dark basic scripts, those are text files so they are small in size. I wonder, it there a way to find the size of all files with a certain extension?

what, my external hard drive? if that's what you meant, yes, only off by 40,000 files
almost the same number of files, but different files!

Agent Dink, you even beat me!

C:
Files: 299,946
Folders: 30,818
Size: 186GB/320GB

E: (storage drive)
Files: 116,100
Folders: 7,963
Size: 31GB/40GB

G: (99% mp3 storage)
Files: 51,060
Folders: 5,438
Size: 314GB/400GB

I bet a lot of your files are like mine, duplicates from years of backups and misc copies. You should check this program out, it'll find all duplicate files on your system using hash to match files.

http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/duplicate-file-finder

It's worked pretty good for me, I just found it last week and already deleted about 1000 duplicates.

Mine is slim I regularly do disk cleanups and stuff to keep my
laptop in top condition, so it is still (relatively) fast.

Agent Dink and Seppuku Arts automatically win because their drive space pie charts have antialiasing.

I assume it's an unofficial Vista skin for Windows XP, perhaps Windows Blinds (which I think is horrible to have installed) or one of the ones that doesn't need a special program. I imagine that would be the source of the problem too.

As for anti-aliasing, I'm guessing it's just something MS added to Vista and Windows 7, though I can't say I've noticed, perhaps not an important feature. Though if it makes me and Dink a winner, then I can see its plus side.

I have 2 partitions at 186GB each, so the capacity you see is out of that amount. On the Mac side, I've used 66.43GB, and on the PC side (which I use primarily for gaming/programming), I have used 47.73GB. I'm currently dual booting OS X and Windows 7 RC.

@Mahoney,

Check out the other free apps on that website. I just ran their registry cleaner and defrag utility. The defrag workes 10x better than Windows and I think it's even quicker. Took about 2-3 hours to defrag over 700GB with one of the drives 60% fragmented. Took it down to 0%! No multiple passes like windows makes you do.
