Hi
Does anyone know the legalitys of using photos of
real cars/vehicles on models for commercial useage?
or is there a forum that deals with this kind of topic.
If I were to photograph the family car say , would I have
the respective car manufacturer contacting me.
Thanks

Jim

You probaly wouldn't have any problems with any copyright laws, but just to be safe, you might want to contact the company. I don't know that much about copyright laws though.

don't know why you would i don't think putting a car in your game would violate any copyright laws but if you did build a car engine (in real life) and based it off another manufactorers design or even copyed the design then you'd have a problem

And if you really don't want to get in trouble. Just change a thing or to. Make the car a litlle bigger, Smaller. And if you have a Dodge Viper(c) Change it to somthing like Doge Vipper.

thats true copy right laws don't cover if the design looks like it if you change one little thing it can be the smallest thing in the world the size of the wheels the glass....or even the bumper or name and bam its yours =)

Hi
Thanks for the input ,its just that While watching
Gamezville on sky tv they were reviewing a racing
game and they said the quality of the cars was not good
and that was because they were not licensed.I assumed
the car manufacturer had to give permission.

You need permission to use it.
You could try asking permission but I think they will not allow it on the grounds that it could harm their products image.

Just make it a little different and use a made up name like in grand theft auto.

www.surrland.com has some great reference images.

It would be more to your benefit to make your own cars anyway as you could create "out of this world" and physically impossible cars accentuating fun aspects of design, shape and form

I forgot to mention, Its very expensive to have a car lit and shot in a white room with a curved back wall. Its probably best to design your own skins from existing model references at the site above.

I just saw a review of London Racer World Champ (or whatever its called) on the PC yesterday - you seem to need a real liscence to use the real car designs in the game. Of course London Racer's developers didnt get a liscence so the game has cars that STRONGLY RESEMBLE the new mini cooper and the pergeot 306, but are not identical.

I always wondered this about guns. Do you need a liscence to use, say, a beretta M92F or a Heckler&Koch MP5 in your game?

Maybe this is something somebody should look into.

If you were to ask a car manufacturer to use their car in a game, if it was commercial/shareware, they wouldnt want them getting trashed up like in Stuntman. Notice how Gran Turismo's realism was knocked down a peg by the fact tht you could hit a wall at 200mph and come off without a scrath? I think that was because the developers werent allowed to harm the image of their cars as mentioned by the_winch before.

Hi all
Thanks again for all your input,if you have time
please take a look at this site:-
http://www.geo-metricks.com/geo-shop/shop-htm/pck-24txcars.htm
The cars are named and appear to have photo type skins.
I wonder can they have permission from all the car manufacturers?
Thanks.

Jim
