I currently own a wii but i'm going to buy either an xbox 360 elite or the 120gb PS3 slim. However, i don't know which one to choose. My best friend has a ps3 but the rest of my friends all have xbox's.

I'm really torn between the two, does anybody have any suggestions?

Buy whichever system has the games you want to play.

I own both consoles, and I would say definitely go for the Xbox 360.

I love them both, but the 360 has a lot more exclusive titles (That I want to play) than the PS3.

Xbox 360 (Fable, Gears of War, Halo, Crackdown and Mass Effect)
PS3 (Little Big Planet , GT5 , MAG)

Its worth making a list of the games you want to play for each console, and choosing from there.

I would Also note that I find the Xbox Live experience to be a lot more enjoyable than PS3 network. There seems to be a lot more content on Xbox Live, the Headsets are more comfortable and if most of your friends have a 360, then it will make your gaming experience more enjoyable too.

I've never played online with a friend on the PS3,
1. Because nobody I know has one
2. Because the headsets kinda suck beans
3. Occasionally there is a slice of lag

If your thinking of getting a PS3 for Little Big Planet, its only amazing really if your playing with friends ( and they are in the same room). Considering only one of your friends owns a PS3, you may find your not playing online as much, and it tends to get a little old... fast.

However, the PS3 is a little more "Mature" than the 360. With a PS3,
1. You can Upgrade the HDD as you please (with standard Laptop SATA drives)
2. You can use Game Saves from the internet with just a usb pen drive
3. You aren't forced to but Sony only Hardware (For instance the charger cable is a standard USB-USB mini cable)
4. The Dashboard is faster
5. The Controller includes an inbuilt battery (non of this play and charge kit nonsense). The controller is also quite a bit lighter a result.
6. (A strange one to add maybe) But the PSU is built into the console. The 360 has a large square block attached to the power cable (Which magically gets cut out of size comparison screen shots). Which also brings me to mention that the Power cable for the PS3 is just a PC power cable. (Again non of this Microsoft manufactured only thing)

Also with the added bonus of BluRay support (Although there isn't much point in BluRay if you haven't got a HDTV)

The PS3 has the same set of games except for the few exclusives. I would go for it, especially if you have a 1080p HD setup.

You mean, Halo 3, ODST, GoW, GoW2, Crackdown, Mass Effect...

All of these games are completely worth the money.

I'd go for the 360, unless you want to get the non-slim version maybe.

Yes to concur with the others, which exclusivity do you want? The PS3 exclusive games or the 360 exclusive games? The 360 has a wider range and a great XBLA selection, but if you're not going to play any of those titles, yet would play PS3 exclusive titles, then the choice should be obvious.

XBox Live is a very attractive feature, but for the full membership you need to pay for each month, which includes online multiplayer, so that in a way sucks, as you can play online with the PS3 for free, some may argue that XBL gives a better service, but I've not noticed the difference personally.

As for stability, that's the 360 off putter for some, but it needn't be one, from what I understand they've improved on it and from what I hear, whether true or not, the Elite is the most stable. I've got a Premium that hasn't failed me yet. Whilst the Elite is cheaper than the PS3 slim, it'd be advisable to buy cover as well, it cost me only £20 for 3 years with GAME, so if it breaks down and isn't covered by the warranty, you're not royally screwed, whilst I doubt it'll happen, but hey, it's piece of mind in case something does go wrong.

Thanks BigAdd and Seppuku for the big replies.

Im aware that the xbox is cheaper, but surely its going to cost alot more in the long run. I've heard from my friends that they often overheat and have to be sent away to be repaired. im also worried im going to have to buy an xbox, and then pay the same amount for all the accessories im going to need, wireless adapter, etc.

The only exlusive titles im interested in are halo and granturismo 5. I've only ever played halo multiplayer on the local console, it seems quite fun when you can laugh about it at the same time, but im sure it'll seem very boring online. However, ive played all the granturismo games and im a huge fan of them

I know that the xbox has alot of cool features, such as playing music when ingame and having access to the Windows Live messenger service, but the playstation firmware is constantly getting improved, am i right?

Im just not keen spending all this cash on an xbox if its not going to be worth it:

Xbox Elite Console - £200
Wireless Adapter - £60
Extra Controller - £35
Battery Packs - £30

Thats £325 to get what you would get for £230 with a ps3
Thats without games, and if i get an xbox, i would want games such as Halo, CoD WaW and Modern Warefare 2, and guitar hero.

So for me its mainly the cost factor, but whereas the xbox is better value for money, when it works, the playstation seems the better option in the longrun.

PS3 is cheaper in the long run man, and the only game you've listed above that you'd miss out on is Halo. Seems your choice is obvious!

The latest Xbox 360 bundles (extra wireless controller and games included)should easily compete with the still expensive PS3.

Wireless adapter? Set up a network bridge through a laptop or PC?
Batter packs? Get rechargeable batteries and a recharger.
Extra Controller? Does it have to be wireless?

That'd save you plenty of cash if you wanted the 360. Though as far as multiplayer is concerned, the PS3 is definitely cheaper in the long run.

I just prefer the 360 due to its exclusives but also because you don't have to install the darn game all the time before playing, whats the point of having a console which needs to take 3 hours just installing the games? Also I have a Ps3 and I got to say, unless you are mad about the PS Exclusives like Gran Turismo etc. there really isn't much point of getting one. Luckily for me however I just can't get enough of Sackboy.

Buying the 360 only makes sense if you buy the Arcade, because then it is the cheapest next-gen console out in the UK by £50. If you're gonna go for a more high-end system you might as well go PS3.

Warning I now work at a game video store (Like that means something?) but we also deal with console repairs. In one day we're likely to get atleast three 360's in for repairs! Those machines are awful build quality.

We had this women bring in her 360 which would not work because it fell from a vertical position down on its side. You might think that this is a serious fall, but we also had a Wii fall from a table (That's about 3 foot of the floor) and it still works perfectly!

Then again watch out for the PS3 slim apparently it's had some heating issues. Then again what console hasn't these days...

I do agree that the X360 has quite a few great titles, but you'll need to take extra special care of it, you look at it the wrong way and it cries itself into the 3ROD.
Good luck choosing!

Also bear in mind that unless you are using a HDTV or your PC's monitor that you're not going to be getting the most out of either of these systems.

There's no point watching a Blu-Ray movie on a SDTV.

I couldn't believe the difference using a HDTV made until I bought one. It was like I was playing different games.

Well yes, although a PC monitor often struggles to keep up with Blu Ray. You can get macro blocking.

360 for sure, exclusives are way better. Plus it might not seem like it, but having a lot of friends that you know to play with online can make you want to use the thing more, get your moneys worth. As well the 360 controller is so egronomical(compared to the dual-shock that is.)

Which console should you buy? That depends on the games you want to play and which console has more of those games, I guess.

I would personally recommend the XB360. It's been a lot of fun for me and I've only had to have it replaced once; the video card on the thing went crazy and died and the console was replaced free of charge (but shipping the thing to the repair place wasn't).

One word of advice though... dropping the XB360 on your foot might break it... your foot, I mean.

Don't know if a PS3 will do that though...

In the beginning there was nothing. There'll be nothing in the end...

Lol I think Im the only one that caught what you said Benjamin . Nice.

I'd recommend the 360 but thats only because its what I have / love. Im really into 360's exclusives, but then again I've got no idea what PS3's exclusives are other than MGS.

I just think overall its a really anjoyable experience on Live. Communicating and hooking up with your friends is easy, Xbox Live Party's work good too, Its pretty cool having a bunch of friend's playing campaign through the same game (or different games) and talking to each other about whats going on in their campaign or whatever they're doing.

As far as the Xbox overheating, I've had it happen, I sent it in and got a brand new system for free within a weeks time, pretty good service if you ask me, but again I guess it could be different depending on your circumstance.

Hmm, would buying a fan for it solve this problem?

Quote: "There's no point watching a Blu-Ray movie on a SDTV. "

I'm not too interested in Blu-ray movies, but i've already got a hdtv solely for whatever console i decide to buy

I'd rather not have to send it away in the first place.

I do like the Party system on live, but ive heard the ps3 is due an update next month that will be very simular to this?

If you are really only going to play single player games get a 360 (more exclusives). But if you are going to play online a lot then get which ever system your friends have.

Theres nothing wrong with sony.... I still dont get it lol.

I'm fairly sure im going to go with the ps3 now, alot of my friends xbox 360s are breaking, and they seem really unreliable. I'm certain that will be the cheaper option aswell, and like i said, i cant wait for GT5

Thanks for the advice everyone

So far it's pretty unanimous that the Xbox 360 is the one you should get.

I also say get the 360. The PS3 has it's few exclusives but nothing like the 360. Yeah the 360's break but when they do they're only gone for a short time. Choosing the PS3 over the 360 because the 360 will break down in 1-2 years time is a terrible reason to choose the PS3. When my 360 broke, microsoft paid for shipping and handling and it came back within one week. Yes they paid for shipping and handling.

PS3 does have blue ray which is cool and all, but no where near worth buying over the 360. This is just my opinion of course.

Quote: "alot of my friends xbox 360s are breaking, and they seem really unreliable"

Like I said, not worth choosing the PS3 over. And GT5 will probably come to the 360 as well like they always do.

Gran Turismo has been a Sony exclusive forever. It will never come to the 360.

However, Forza 3 just came to the 360 as an exclusive, and it's getting great reviews (even beating Gran Turismo according to some reviewers).

without reading the above,

PS3 all the way, microsoft have really been tight with the 360, there diskdrives are cheep crap and noisy, they patch stuff so you cant do anything else with them, where as sony are activly supporting Linux on the PS3 and whatnot. there is also talk of a game that will do for the PS3 what Halo did for xbox

Firstly, Sony has stopped their "active" support of Linux, and the PS3 slim doesn't run Linux at all. Secondly, this elusive game you're referring to is probably Killzone 2, which didn't sell or do nearly as well as Halo.

I'd just like to add that Halo 3 is the most over-rated game of all time. If it makes you feel better though, MGS4 is my candidate for worst game ever [MGS1 is my candidate for best].

It seems like you had already made a decision to buy the PS3 as most here are saying get the 360. Why even ask if you already wanted to buy the PS3? lol. You asked which one to buy and nearly everyone is saying buy the 360, that seems pretty obvious that that's what you should buy if you really wanted our opinion lol.

Quote: "I'd just like to add that Halo 3 is the most over-rated game of all time"

[rant]Yes even though it sold millions and millions of copies and is one of the most (if not the most) online played console game. But because you don't like it (and of course many others don't) it's the most over-rated game of all time. [/rant]

Maybe, but it is still a pretty bloody good game.

Quote: "they seem really unreliable. I'm certain that will be the cheaper option aswell,"

How is it cheaper exactly? If it RRoDs on you, you send it back to Microsoft and they fix it, then send it back with a free month of XBL, all free of charge, except for the fact that you miss out on Xbox for 2 weeks at best.

I dunno why you're wanting to go with the PS3 when most are saying to go with the 360.

Do NOT get the PS3 slim. If you insist on gettin a PS3, get the original one, not the slim version.

Go with the 360, definately.
