I remember this one, He's done it the Final Fantasy way, a background plane and a foreground plane with the character(s) running between those. Quite a nice result when you do it right.

That was a long download.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work. I get a blank screen for quite a while, before it comes up with Runtime Error 502 - Image does not exist at line 2250.

@Plotinus - Yes... it's sorta big at 161MB (but after downloading myself the transfer speed seems slower than it should be at 106kb per second)

That's strange you are getting an error - but thank you for sending the error and link number - I will look into that.

That line is right where DarkVideo pastes the imageid movie to the screen - for some reason it's not working on your system though - I don't understand why?



If anyone was able to download and run the game ok... please let me know... thank you.

I'm running Vista. I tried running the program in compatibility mode and this time it worked. The opening animations were very jittery but I think that may be an issue with my computer running slowly for some weird reason of its own. When I get a chance I will restart and try running it then.

Even so, the opening animation looks incredibly impressive, so I will look forward to trying the demo properly.

Thanks Plotinus for trying again and posting the results here...

However... Now I am even more confused!!!!

This game was designed on a Vista 64bit machine (and have tested on several other Vista and XP machines) - You should not have to select "compatiblity mode"

I am also guessing that since you are posting in this forum that you program in darkbasic and your system is designed to run Darkbasic Pro games - Although this might be something with the plug-in Dark Video. For some reason the DarkVideo code and your system does not like it unless you switch to compatiblity mode???

(I have already contacted Darkvideo Support about this issue... I will keep you updated)

Perhaps it has something to do with your version of DirectX (that is all I can think of - unless you have a few other things running in the background that my program doesnt like)

Some customers from my previous games did mention they needed to temporarily turn off their anti-virus software.

I downloaded and played. Beautiful game. I'm surprised how well the billboarding worked in 3D. The rooms look absolutely brilliant.

I do have some feedback, if you're interested. The opening video didn't tell me much. I had no idea why she was there, what she was doing, or why I should care. Plus, her hair was very odd.

I thumbed through your media and found a huge collection of bmp files. BMPs are VERY slow to load. DDS files can be used in their place just as effectively but will load instantly. It would cut down significantly on your loading time.

The animations for the main character were very robotic. You should get an FPSC rig from FPSC X10's Jon Fletcher's Juggernaut character and rig your character with it. You can use Fragmotion to extract the specific animations that you want to use. It has a huge variety of them.

The voice acting was very good. The puzzles weren't too hard or obscure to deal with. I played the original LHoD a long time ago, I look forward to seeing the finished product.

Yes... I am not happy with the lead character's walk... thank you for the suggestions for software to fix it. I will try that out.

waw I was on these forums back in 2003 and I don't believe I remember seeing any of your games, pretty darn impressive looking, currently downloading.

Are you developing within a team if so how many people, or solo. Amazing scenery, where did you learn to be so darn good .

@Cybermind- Yes.. I was kind of curious if that might fix it also - however I don't like the idea that some customers are going to have to do this to get the game to work - I have several vista machines and do not have to do this - any ideas why SOME users (like Plotinus) need to select compatibility mode or administrator mode?

@Dragon Knight - Thanks for taking a look - did the game play ok on your machine?

To answer your question... Thank you for the comments - I am just solo (except music) I made the original Last Half of Darkness in 1989 and have been working in the computer gaming business for 20 years.

Nice game, but I got stuck! I have no idea where to get batteries for the remote control.

I like the graphics very much, and your attention to the little details like the flies on the trashcan, the shadow of the fan on the ceiling, or the totally unexpected thunder... The only thing I don't understand is why his girlfriend selected such a grimy place to stay at, I wouldn't touch anything in that hotel without disinfectant but it has a good atmosphere.

At first I had the feeling that the main character sounds a bit "too cool" but I quickly got used to it. Do you do the sounds yourself? It's noticable that it's the same person (I hope I'm not mistaken) but pretty good acting since Bruce on the phone sounds completely different (and quite evil, too).

Problems:

I had to disable my background anti-adware because it slowed down the game a lot, but I noticed that with other games too. No problem with background anti-virus software, though. (Vista.)

I clicked the anti-aliasing in the options menu and the screen went black, it gave an "object not found" error message and I had to restart the game. I guess you still need to write some code for losing the device context.

There seems to be no option in the menu to resume the game after saving. I had to load back the just-saved game to continue, fortunately that works. But I couldn't find where the saved game files are? I like to know that, so that I can make a backup copy of saves.

Altogether, it's a professional work, very well done! Puzzle adventure games are not my cup of tea since I always get stuck (see above) but I actualy like this one and maybe I'll try one of the earlier episodes too. By the way, I played through the flash creepy-house game on your web site and I liked that as well.

P.S. I didn't have a problem with the intro movie. It's just misterious enough to raise the interest and I suppose the story will explain the rest.

She's was a journalist sent to the small town to do a story on some recent vampire-like murders, but something happened to her while she was investigating the story - you must figure out what happened to her.

Yes..the antialias needs a little work too

After saving... you should be able to click on "Back to main menu" and then click on "return to game" in upper-right corner - however I am going to change this so after you save it takes you back into game.

Thanks for the hint. I actually thought about that, but missed the "active spot" where the device can be manipulated. Now I have finished the demo.

I overlooked the "return to game" option as well because it's on top of the screen. It would be better visible in the menu but it's OK.

I had another problem: after going back to find the batteries, I realized that I somehow lost the remote control from the inventory! I didn't find it again, had to replay the demo from the beginning. Can this be a bug or is it possible to drop objects?

Thank you for the explanation about the story. I hope it was made clear by the smily that the comment about how the hotel looks like was not a criticism, rather a compliment on how well you modelled the environment! The feeling gets through to the player. I'm looking forward to the full game when it's released.

i had the same experience as miraben; the remote control went missing. i think it didn't make it into the save game at all... it was there when i saved and quit but when i followed the hint (was stuck on the same thing/battery) after reloading, the remote was nowhere to be found.

overall, very cool, and the artwork is amazing. of note, i play in 800x600, which i set my desktop to before launching (or the game lags heavily. see system specs in sig). sometimes it runs quickly, but sometimes it lags as if i was still in native 1680x1050. it made me wonder if resolution/settings were included in the save game and had reverted to those settings on load?

game play was "natual" but i think some tweaks are in order, still:

one thing that bugs me is the "wiggle" effect when an item from the inventory is over a "usable" trigger location. i wish it would outline itself in green showing it's usable or maybe "overlay" with the "arrow take" icon and make it green, instead. small gripe but i think it would add polish.

another suggestion is to add a "skip to end" option in the "live" cinematics (like the phone call). i appreciate that we can skip to the next line of dialogue, but after a couple re-tries, i'd like to skip some of them altogether. with that, the other dialogue sequences... ie, when you look at the ashtray and then move to something else... i could be in the bathroom, say, yet it continues the "...glad i kicked the habit" line; i feel it should have halted once i stopped looking at it and moved on.

again, good stuff here and i can see the MANY hours you've put into this. it's very stable, shows quality, and high potential for fun. i've seen your work before and regret not experiencing it before this. i'll be downloading your other demos very soon!

@Virtual Nomad - thanks for taking a look and sending some feedback - I agree with your suggestions and will update the demo.

As far as the resolution... it runs only in 1024x768 - the game cannot adjust this since I would have to have pre-rendered backgrounds for each resolution.

I think the slowdown you are experiencing may be my "slowdown routine" that is trying to selfadjust depending on how fast your computer is - I have to slow the entire game loop down - otherwise it will run way too fast on faster computers - i just slow the game loop down until it gets to 30-50 fps - there's probably a better way to do this but not sure how.

Hi billy, very solid stuff! The end of the demo was definitely effective in how you used lighting with the thing.

Aside from the similar Anti-Aliasing problem, I only had two issues. First, aesthetics aside, the walking animation for the character would sometimes take a while to get going, and then jump ahead really fast unexpectedly. Sort of a Speedy Gonzalez effect. The other thing was that sometimes I'd click on say the towels or the couch and wait for him to give his observation, but nothing would come. Then when I tried something else later like exiting the room or looking at the room service menu, all of a sudden he'd start saying the towels or couch line, then halfway through switch to whatever line he would have normally said like the room service line.

I'm running a MacBook Pro, XP Home with bootcamp, latest nvidia drivers, Geforce 8600 GM, 2GB ram. I also had Avira running originally, but disabled it.

Working fine now. I didn't use Administrator mode, just stuck with Compatibility mode. In fact I just turned off Compatibility mode and tried it again, and it still worked fine then. So I'm not sure what was going on before. Probably something weird on my computer.

Anyway, I finished the demo without a great deal of difficulty. It looks amazing, and your use of lighting to create atmosphere is fantastic. My main criticism from an aesthetic point of view is just how slow it is. The main character seems to walk through treacle, and he's got slidy feet as well. In fact everything seems very slow, even the fades from one scene to the next.

I also had some difficulty with the remote control, as I couldn't work out how to turn the TV on. It took me a while to work out that I could right-click the remote control to look at it more closely, and then click directly on the power button. So I suppose some instructions at the start would help with this sort of thing. (Or perhaps I should have read the readme.txt more carefully...)

I really liked the minigame with the ice machine.

All in all, it really has great potential!

@Plotinus - Glad you got it working and was able to finish game... Thank you for posting your experience - (However it should not be that slow - this may have been fixed in newer version 1.3v- not sure which version you have)

I think I have fixed the sliding feet issue too - and now display text next to inventory items explaining to player if they can right-click to examine closer.

@Plotinus: do you have Ad-Aware running in the background, by any chance? I had to switch that off because it slowed down the game tremendously. The symptoms you mentioned are similar.

[Mireben] No, nothing like that. It's hard to tell whether the game was running more slowly than intended or not - all I can say is that it seemed slow, not in frame rate but just in the speed of animations and movement.

Oh yes, billy I forgot to mention that, at first when I loaded the game the man stood there and was animating, but no sound or subtitles appeared. If I mashed spacebar a couple times it seemed to get it unstuck and the dialogue started.

Thanks DragonKnight and BearCDP2 for letting me know - for some reason "SOME" sound card interpet the "sound playing()" command differently.

Does this happen everytime (you must hit SPACE BAR) or just the first time you played game? If you guys want to be offical beta testers of the game... I will give you a copy of the game when finished.

Just tried this and ... it's beautifully done.

I haven't found the screwdriver yet. Perhaps there isn't one?

This looks like a rather colourful cross between "Silent Hill" and "Syberia". Must have another go at solving the puzzles.

But who cares about the puzzles when you have artwork like this to admire?

No obvious problems so far. I'm using Vista 64 bit and I installed it in my DBPro Projects folder in the Program Files (x86) folder.

Found it - and filled the bucket with ice and placed it on the TV (was I supposed to do that?). But can't find the batteries for the remote now.

[This is the story of my life when it comes to this sort of game.]

But as far as I can tell the game is working exactly as it should. Not so sure about the player though.

Don't. It was the obvious place to look - I just didn't persist enough first time round.

Commercial games present similar difficulties for me so I wouldn't worry about it. Just make sure someone posts some hints and cheats somewhere.

Completed the demo! There's hope for me yet.

The game did seem laggy when I returned to it. Two possible causes spring to mind: (1) my AV software is doing something at the moment; or (2) the opening video is playing in the background somewhere (this time I clicked to skip the video rather than see it through - nice job though). I would have thought this machine would cope - but it has been acting strangely recently.

I'll test it again both ways round to see if the video is likely to be the cause.

[This is the third time I've tried to post this. Must have hit the back button instead of the post button by mistake twice in a row. ]

[Edit2 - see previous post. Time I took a break obviously.]

[Edit3 - I can't reliably reproduce the lagging problem so I suggest you just note it and give it low priority and wait till someone else has the same problem. The symptoms are that the cursor fails to follow the mouse immediately and the main character initially fails to move then suddenly rushes to the other side of the room when told to move. I'll post back if I can be more specific.

Did you make the opening video in DBPro? It was brilliant.

I noticed one silly typo: in the opening telephone conversation I'm sure someone says "LISTEN JOHHNY". Johhny?]

@Green Gandalf - Thanks for posting more comments - I think I might of fixed the lagging issue - before I had some crazy slowdown routine implemented instead of simply using the "sync rate 30" to keep the frames and gameplay at a constant 30fps.

The opening video is actually all prerendered in a 3 program and uses DARKVIDEO plugin for playback.

A new version has been uploaded 1.9.1v if anyone wants to try it.

I would actually head for PNG's. They do take longer to load (not as long as BMP), but they are compressed, and it will hopefully get the size of your game down...

Very nice graphics, I remember your first half of Darkness game. That was brilliant! I'm sure this one's even better. I'll have to give your download a go, but it's gonna take a while, considering my network connection...

New version looks good - can't detect a lagging problem at all.

I think the installer still refers to 1.8 which alarmed me for a moment after a 1.5 hour download. But I checked the file sizes and they'd changed so I guessed I did in fact have the new version.

I now have the perfect Xmas gift for my wife. I'd been stuck up to now.

@Green Gandalf - Good eye! I will change that version number on the installer. Glad its working better.

@TheComet - Thanks for taking a look and I will look into those PNG files - please let me know how it works on your system.

@Xarshi - Someone else had a similiar issue - they mentioned they needed to select "Compatibilty Mode" - if that doesn't work try run right clicking on icon and "run as adminstrator" - you should not have to do this but for some reason it worked for that particular person.
