It depends on what program you're exporting from...

They SAID that given enough time a million monkeys with typewriters could recreate the collected works of William Shakespeare... Internet sure proved them wrong.

The .OBJ is the Wavefront file format, i.e. the Maya format. It shouldn't be a problem.

Have you tried to just export it from the file menu?

Guyon its in the Export menu as standard... if you don't have it, perhaps you should start questioning the legalities of your copy.
I also find it odd that anyone using Maya would even think to ask such a question.

Not to seem rude but anyone who uses it will be a member of the Maya online community, which surely they'd be more help - especially considering they'd simply point you to the download area where all of the Mayan plugins are held.
Again you have to be a member to access these buy seeing as you have 5.0 Unlimited surely you must be a member, no?
i mean you'll need that 13digit PID code that you get on the back of the CD Case, the same one you need to unlock Maya in the first place.

Wish i could help more but we're not allowed to mirror files from the server.

I don't care if I'm rude or not, but I'm always suspicious of anyone with a piece of software that costs $6,999 retail.

"legalities of your copy?" Give me a break Raven. And before you accuse someone you should know the product better? Or act a little more like the professional you clam to be?
It was NOT under EXPORT till I finally figured out how to add it.
It was under Window/Setting/Plug-in Manager

BTW MicroMan: You should care if you are rude. It is part of who you are, and you should have pride in that. Or not i guess.
..And why should I not have a copy if my company pays for it?

Also I am a 3ds Max professional and new to Maya, with all the million of settings, things are hard to find when they are buried. Sorry if I bothered all of you for asking such a seemingly simple question. I will not bother you with them again. Even though the answer was not as easy as you suggested.

no Guyon, on default installation setup ... standard single access node - not network setup, all of the additional plugins are installed.

So it SHOULD'VE already been setup and under File>>Export
if it wasn't then you musta installed it with minimum options, that aside the manual explains howto setup the plugins AND the Maya forum over at www.alias.com ALSO would've been a far better place to ask this question.
which i've not seen this questioned asked there by anyone, if you wish to be above suspicion of things then REGISTER in the forums of the product and ask your question about it IN THIER forums.

Who else is more likely to know the answer to your questions, a forum full of people who have a budget programming language or the makers of a $10k product?

Mircoman $6,999 is only the price for Maya5 Builder or Maya4.5 Unlimited ... Maya5 Unlimited is $13,999
even for a seasoned professional it isn't a cheap peice of software.
Most home users never purchase the Unlimited version only the Builder or Complete.

Sorry but my suspicions are not just high here due to the price, but the fact that help is being asked for the simplist of task within a forum where really there are only small handfull of people who can either a)afford it or b)have access to it.

It's like everyone who seemed to get Max5 the day it came out... even I didn't get Max5 until 4months post released and i use it professionally.

-- -- --

Sorry but Maya5 is only just out and for someone who is trying to learn Maya even a professional artist wouldn't make the mistake of spending so much money on a product they don't even know anything about... Maya 4.5 PLE or Maya 4.5 Complete would've made a more sound choice, especially considering what you get with Unlimited is really Complete just with a tonne of upgrades like Hair/Liquids/Dynamics/etc... which are just upgraded versions of what are with Complete anyways.

There is a manual about as thick as a phone book supplied with Maya, they don't supply it just so you have a new paperweight. It is there to EXPLAIN the product to you.

Failing that there is an entire online community which is populated by only legal members and Maya PLE members (however the PLE members only get like a very small section of the forum which they can actually access)

-- -- --

It's extremely hard to believe here someone would splash out so much money on a program they don't even know yet ... sorry but Maya5 PLE is released in a matter of a months time and currently Maya 4.5 PLE is available to download - it would've made far more sense to use that and learn howto use Maya before you just jumped in with a retail copy.

Raven you are just plain wrong in this case. Look I missed an export, what is the Big Deal? Ever make a mistake? Ever admit it?
And who made you Lord of the Forum? Saying what questions were to easy to ask?

Look you should either decided to help, or quietly move on. Your constant passing of judgments does not make you look intelligent, but simply exposes you for the fool you are.
