try both.
model then try to texture.
thats the point.
do more complex objects so you can move further in your modeling.

take a look at my thread
http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=162821&b=3&p=0
i have done simple objects but still it takes work.
texturing and modeling a box doesn't take that long.
just tryin to give you an idea.(granted my texture is )

and also,
im not trying to beat a dead horse but,
start with 1 or 2 primitives and move and extrude the points to get the desired shape.
like in my thread i used three primitives for the chair
one for the seat and back. one for the arms, and one for the rollers.

Sorry, but you really have to go beyond primitives, all you do right now is use cylinder and box primitives, try toreally replicate how a chair really flows, you never see chairs with flat rests, block feet, and cylinder supports.

1. Yes i am.
2. Yes, that is cool!
3. first you go to materials, then you press new. but make sure the groups you want textured is selected.

that was a bad answer for 3.

3. get a UVMAPPER then import a (preferably .obj file because .obj keeps proportions when UVMAP) you should see a load of white lines and points, then go to edit and select all.
Now the points should be red(selected).
then go to tools and then UVMAPPING,
and hit the kind of map you want. (play around and see which one best fits your model)
then export the model to .3ds or .obj
DONT close it yet, go to file>UVMAP>save, and save as a .bmp/.jpg
but keep the image proportional, like 500x500 or 1000x1000 (or it'll be stretched/deformed.
Then go to an image editor and hand texture the image or find an image online and scale it to the section of the image you want to texture

Use Lithunwrap. its free.
and if you dont have an image editing software, use gimp. it's free too.

if u did, then just select the appropriate layer, select all of it (ctrl + click on the layer) then use a slightly lighter brush and paint it over

u can also just go to adjustments(?) -> colour adjustments (?) -> something and contrast

sorryXD havent ps up atm XD hope it helped though

AWESOME.
anyway the fragile box texture is good but turn the opacity down on the symbols a bit. but the barrel is good.
I know im kind of contradicting myself, but try complex models man!
I mean you have freakin 3ds MAX ! Do a gun or , something that takes at least a half hour to model and alot more to texture.
Do car or an animal or a character. Even though my thread right now is about simple models only, i still have done other things (especially guns) just search the threads i've done.Granted others have done more, but i think you've practiced enough on boxes and whatnot.

anyway you go, good luck mate

You have just bought an industry standard, extremely expensive package, and you are still making primitive shapes? Come on man, be adventurous. Or if you dont know about the edit poly functions yet, look up some tutorials.

no, no, im not disrespecting your skill level.

Im not that kind of person, but finding a max 9 disc, then buying a £1k upgrade to 2010 within 10days without a huge develing into the program. Its dubious lol.

what you're doing is a good start but i recommend that you both move past primitives i.e. spheres, cylinders and cubes and start to make more complex shapes, also think about your models for instance if that water tank was as high as you've made it then i don't think the ladder would be required, not only because theres nothing at the end of it

I would suggest trying a building (inside and out not just a closed box) next. It's still fairly geometric and simple overall, but requires more complex features like walls, doors, windows etc.

It's a good next step up from boxes and the like.
