3d Compo: Out of this World!

Make a model of something "Out of this world" Organic, mechanical, Botanical, Celestial, galactic, orbital, Alien.. surprise us, we like surprises.

To give you all plenty of time this Compo will run up to February 20, 2010.

Have fun with this one, let's start the new year off with a thousand entries! (LoL, I might regret saying that )

Cheers!

P.S. Thanks again Mazz426 for giving us the inspiration. (and I hope you don't mind my using your alien head in the banner, but the 'apples' didn't fit the theme, lol, j/k thanks!)

Just a nit-pick, but you spelled imagine wrong in the banner.

um botanical is something made from plants. celestrial isn't technically a word. celestial is but not celestrial.

Are we allowed to use renders or in-game screenshots of our models?

Hmm, I may enter this one...

[edit]
Could we do something from a sci-fi movie such as Star Wars?

Darth Potato, as long as the models you render in game are yours, the answer is 'Yes'

Zeus, I think something from a Galaxy far, far, away. would qualify for 'out of this world'

Zeus, I don't think you need to worry about making a Star Wars model and making a rendering for this contest. There are literally hundreds of thousands of fan art on the internet, I do not think Lucasfilm will taking legal action unless you are slandering their name or trying to profit from their intellectual property. Lucasfilm has always been a big supporter of the fan base.

Cheers!

messing about in max for an hour and ive finished the first ship for the battle. This is the one that kills themselves and everything else in a last stand attempt at winning.

Well, they failed and took everything out with them -_-"

Started to play with the enemy ships. Most of these will esploding in flames so im keeping the organics well worn and burning. Ill refine them once im finished. Only 350 polies, not bad for a small attack ship.

I had a reference this from some random concept image on my drive.

UPDATE: x2
kicking about again, spent about 2 hours playing with a hive ship design i doodled over my stuff in a double free.

It came out pretty well and im thikning on the texture. Though im lazy when mapping, so i think a side of planar slap will do lol.

That or completly after-op it on with PS, but that'd defeat the point of a 3d compo lol.

ehh im drawing anyway.

//

Im not sure yet, but i think ive done too many loop supports so im thinking that i might tone it down a little by removing a set.

//

toned down the loops and fixed the flow, looks better now, im happy ^_^

Slowly but surely, im amassing textures for it. My will be done!

im going to use a old trick and use swatchs for my textures// squarish blocks of textures then i can overlay the UV on to save time. That along side Neo's texture technique shall make this rather easy. Ao ill get to work soon as i pass this deadline.

// crys its all due tommorow //

EDIT - THIS IS MY FINAL ENTRY

Hmm. I thought it ended tomorrow, so I got cracking this morning and started a model. It's my first in quite a while, and my first proper entry here in ages too.

Problem is, the comp doesn't end tomorrow. I hate long deadlines I much rather be pushed and under pressure. ANYWAY, I have pretty much finished it, but might actually re-visit it and go to town on some pretty effects and settings.

It's a game ready model, at 1000 polygons, but rendered to look pretty with some nice effects. Took about an hour to flesh out the concept completely, and 2 hours for the model/texture.

Here is a taster. I'll also post the concept next.

Back end of the beast...

Regards,
Greenlig

Yeah, just did that, sculpted it a bit, and re-rendered. Sadly, I forgot to use SSS on it, and it took 1hr 17 minutes to render. Sigh. Will do it again some time.

5 days late, but I'm going to post my entry just in case it might get counted. No worries if it doesn't count, I know that it's late.

[EDIT] Hm... this is very big. Is there any way to resize without reuploading?
