How can I get my posters to be transparent?

Download paint.net, when you create a texture change the alpha of the image to a transparency level (such as 50) then save it as a .dds, use that as a texture.

but posters can only be PNG JPG or BMP

.PNG format can support alpha, so save it as a .PNG.
