-but what's it got to do with manga

I understand a 1974 Japanese anime can be quite obscure for the poké-generation,but I can assure you that Go Nagai's style is about as manga-esque as it can be...and if it wouldn't be for Tetsuka Osamu, the father of manga/animation,he'd be the one called so.

after all,he funded Toei Animation(aka toei doga)

Just because it doesn't have those shiny big chibi eyes and heart-shaped head means it's got nothing to do with manga...It's a classic character from Cutey Honey and Grendizer.

Ahh, I remember that style now, the model looks a bit like something from 'Nightmare Before Christmas'. Very nicely put together though, love those teeth!

Don't lecture me on anime, I've been into the stuff since Robotech. I know all about Osamu Tezuka, Rintaro, Katsuhiro Otomo, Shirow Masamune, and (my personal favorite) Y. Amano (His first name keeps setting of the language filter). I'm not the "poké-generation" otaku, you seem to think I am. The reason why I ask is that model looked like it came from Invader Zim, anime isn't the easiest medium to trasform into 3d.

Come on guys, you can't get all upity about it - we are talking about cartoons after all!
1974, that's older than me! - just wondering, what was the very first animated film that would be considered anime, like who invented it?.
I always thought 'Battle of the Planets' was about as early as the style got - but it seems it goes further back than that, I do sorta recognise that Mexican looking guy, probably seen him on TV when I was young. Did he ever appear on any adverts, like bubblegum wrappers or something? (Van-B's starting to feel his age).

Van,Battle Of the planets aired in '79 I think.

The earliest animes are much older than robotech, which looked rather american styled to me(looks back at his Robotech2 poster on the wall,The Sentinels) yep...

What I could think of as a first anime ever would be either the 60's Astroboy or Kimba(aka Leo the king or Le Roi leo) which inspired the movie the lion King...Both by Osamu.

Go Nagai has to be the most prolifient one though with Devilman,Mazinger Z(aka Tranzor Z),Getter Robot and Violence Jack...

Leiji Matsumoto has my heart as far as the style is concerned...Like Captain Harlock, made rather slim people which gave an ouitstanding look, which one of the main characters,Toshiro, was drawn in the same style as Rigel up here...Matsumoto made also several other animes based on the style and success Captain Harlock had.

BTW:I didn't mean to offend you Arrow, but seeing you didn't know it was a manga/anime style,I thought I'd make you aware it is.Also, you made it sound as if I tried to implie you don't know anything about animes, which I didn't...If I really wanted to do so,there're many better ways, like being direct and telling you,it's all about how you take it.

True,. but Robotech was one of the first to be released to this side of the planet, the rest we got retroactively, a big time buumer finding out some of my favs came out before I was even born.

Matsumoto is pretty amazing, didn't he do those Daft Punk music Videos awhile back?

As for taking offence, I guess we're both guilty here. The problem is you can't realy type subtle tones that really determine if a comment is to be taken as offencive or not. The limitaions of the medium, I guess.

I have to disagree with you on the 'first to be released to this side of the planet' because Battle of the Planets(Gatchaman) was the one.

In fact,it was produced for America...Japanime had a reputation of violence so they came on with this one, which hadn't any.

From what you can see on this link to an anime timeline,Nagai dominated the 70's which was the golden era of Japanime all over the world.

Devilman
Mazinger Z
Cutey Honey
Getta Robo G
Great Mazinger
Grandizer

For people living in U.K Bomber X(StarFleet) fro Nagai was strong also back then as well as here.

Not the very first but one of the bigining ones, besides it was the one that really hooked alot of people into anime, the first real stepping stone.

Not trying to be argumentative, but I don't think Robotech was in any way the first real stepping stone for "western" manga, but it was probably the most popular adaptation at that point (among boys at any rate).

I guess if it was your first entry point into the genre it would seem pivotal; but Astroboy, Speed Racer, Battle of the Planets, Star Blazers and Kimba were all pretty huge in their time.

That's how I remember it anyway.

I watched Astroboy and Kimba all my youth.I loved'em.

Battle Of the Planets was also extremely popular in 1981 in Canada,France and US(way before robotech).

Also,Ulysse31 and Mysterious Cities of Gold....Not to mention Captain Future which was a big hit especially in Germany.

There was also,Demetan the little Frog(don't know the english name)
The little Orphan Prince(you know that lil' bee boy name Eutchie)...Candy Candy was huge in Canada and Europe.

Also,Remi,Hector Malot's masterpiece remade by a Japanese group.

The most popular anime in Quebec,France,Italy and even Saudi-Arabia was Grendizer aka Goldorak...Go Nagai's fourth generation of super robot serie.

All these anime aired in the early 80's in Canada(Ontario&Québec),US and France.

Well actually it could be possible as Grendizer(Goldorak) was the most popular anime at that time.

Most of the money made with this cartoon was with the figurines and all derived products...They even made Mustard jars with Grendizer's(the robot) face on it.

The anime was an instant success in France and is still recognized as an icon in both France and Québec province to this day.

Captain Harlock also was the second biggest hit.

I'm not sure, but I think they only used images of the newest series of Capt. Harlock called 'Saga'...Star Blazers was his creation as well.

Nah, I remember seeing an interview where he talk about making them, may it was on the CT website or inside there Dicovery CD cover, I can't remember. It's pretty amazing that he's still doing this stuff in his 70's.

Any more comments before Texturing?

Although,I do work in a non-linear fashion so it's easy to come back and add detail to an unwrapped mesh.

I'm seriously thinking of making the final render using softimage Exp.
