Hi again everyone,

I’m not sure if you’ve seen my other thread but I’m working on online marketing for TGC and part of that is to work on the Facebook and Twitter accounts to help spread the word of TGC’s products and amazing community!

In terms of the Facebook and Twitter TGC accounts, what would you like to see us doing on there? Do you want insights into the company? Do you like us linking back to forum threads from there? How would you like us to take the TGC YouTube channel forward?

In case you haven't already, feel free to check out our Facebook fan page and Twitter page.

Thanks!

James

To be honest, I don't care too much about the TGC facebook page, actively participating on there would be like social suicide.

As for twitter, I don't use it. It would be cool to have a decent TGC youtube channel however, not sure what you could put on it though.

I personally think their should be more competitions helt BY TGC and not the members here. Wether its on the forum, on the facebook page once and month or a twitter based competition of some sort.

IMO, the best way to get interest is to offer something in return which (the competitions atleast) could link back to the TGC Homepage to get more interest here.

Thanks for the replies.

About competitions, in addition to what Shaun Of The Dead said, are there other thoughts on the types of competitions you would like TGC to run?

For me, the most enjoyable competitions were the Alienware one, where we got an alien model and simply had to make a game featuring it - and the retro one, where we re-made a classic game. I think having a challenge from an even playing field is best, everyone starting with set media. Media creation in competitions puts people off, it takes probably longer than coding, so making it accesible for more people is the main thing.

I agree that a good YouTube channel would be better than Facebook, maybe some video compilations of finished games would be good. I think a lot of people investigate game development on youtube, but might not persue it based on the complexity. Show the results, show how easy it is, sort of thing.

Agreed re Facebook & Twitter - I can't remember the last time I logged into FaceBook for any period of time, and I've never used Twitter - but I am on YouTube almost every night.

Regarding facebook and twitter, i'd only want them there if they are actively updated, with product news or updates rather than highlights from the forums, as i visit those frequently. I don't just want to join a fan page for the sake of it, i'd need something interesting on there.

I'm down with the competitions though, it may be too much to ask but the 3d competitions need prizes, whether its just TGC store points or user created, a little incentive is nice. I'm not a fan of the awards you get, not that i don't like them, its nice to be able to have that honour for a month but for me its not enough to take time out to participate. I know the community generally use them for practice and they have picked up of late, but I'd rather have something at the end of it for all of my hard work. Probably just me though.

Same thing goes for getting people interested in the products, letting people use the full product for free, for a month as part of a competition would be nice. Probably hard to protect against piracy that way though.

Maybe some more graphic related competitions that most of us are capable of doing. The newsletter cover competition had alot of input and got alot of members involved.

Excellent posts and thanks to everyone so far!

It definitely sounds like a competition involving at least YouTube would be something people enjoy. There are quite a few options with that so feel free to keep posting with thoughts and opinions! Would you feel more motivated to make finished games if you knew they would go onto the TGC YouTube channel?

I was just lamenting the other day that we need an official competition. I think it's been at least 2 or 3 years since TGC had a DBP/GDK competition with a theme. It would be great if there was a new one.

But we need an actual official programming competition for DBP/GDK. Sure we've had little compos here and there, but there's still nothing like a big official TGC comp

Maybe make a video version of the newsletter or post the newsletter on facebook.

Do we have a repository of old stuff made with TGC products?
You could let people download games/apps, maybe feature one or two a month in the newsletter.

I think BatVink is doing a tremendous job with the newsletter but at the moment it is more of an update for the community, whereas I think it could be like a magazine filled with stuff to attract new people to TGC.

Everything worthwhile requires effort.
