As long as the UV map is exported correctly, I don't think it matters too much on what materials are exported with the file, just as long as the appropriate images are provided with the download. I know that when I use darkbasic, I assign all the textures individually anyway.

You could probably upload the .x file
with another, but I would go the .obj or .3ds route. It makes it easier for others to open it inside of their modeling app.
