Hey all, just wondering if anyone has ever bought a domain name from a 3rd party that is camping on it. I recently bought simgames.co and I checked the .com and saw nothing there but a for sale page. I called the number and asked about a few domains they had for sale and brought this one up later in the conversation so as not to make them think that is the one I really wanted. The first few I asked about were between $300 and $4,000 when I asked about simgames.com they quoted $157k. That seemed like such a huge jump. Can a name be that valuable when there is no site attached at all? I understand if it was something like games.com or a 2,3, or 4 letter domain. I did buy it because it gets quite a few searches for the exact term sim games but the value seems so insane in comparison. Any experience appreciated.

No its not worth that much, no domain really is. But the owner is just a pansy-arsed cyber squatter looking to make money by ripping off people. Those are the people that ruin the internet for the rest of us. Obviously you can't afford that, but maybe Maxis would want it and they have the funds to get it.

I know its inflated I checked some with some valuation sites and they show its value (for the name alone) to be between 16k and 45k. I know the name is keyword rich and very relevant to a search so that certainly makes it valuable over something like Joesgames.com. I was just surprised that of all the sites I asked about this one was so far above the rest.

We've had this problem with a domain, the name I wanted, turned out to be an acronym for something else, which of course the mob sitting on, is unwilling to let go without deep pockets..

simgames.com could probably net that much (and much more) if the owner ran things properly. So yes, it could be worth that much. You could probably haggle the price down a bit.

Ill be buying up my domain next year when i learn a little about html and setting one up of course. Every graphics artist needs a good portfolio site to show off there work. Quite unfortunate though, due to my name being so close to lazarus google trys its dammed hardest to ignore me lol. Hmm wonder what i could use.

All of the dab.* domains are taken. When I saw that dab.biz was expiring, I was not going to risk someone snatching it and taking it before me, so I went to snapnames.com and paid $60-ish to get the domain and have it registered for a year.

I'm considering going through Sedo.com to get dab . info but I've read a lot of bad reviews about it so I'm hesitant to do that. :/

heh took a look on both of those sites dab and they have that price listed

Jerico Unless they came down to $1500 or less I will stick with my .co I would love to have the .com also but even at $25k it would take a long time to recoup that investment

I had a question on this myself. Going through a website such as http://www.buydomains.com, for all of the prices, it mentions this:

Quote: "* Price reflects a 10 year registration fee.
One year of registration is $24.95."

Does this mean that the price would continue to recur(in this case, $24.95) every extra year that you want it? So that essentially, you'd be paying a much higher monthly fee to hold the particular domain name you want than you would an un-taken one?

You may be able to transfer the domain after 6 months to a proper registrar that doesn't rape you. Check the terms. (Though I believe it's a requirement by ICANN or some such)

Hobgoblin Lord,

I've checked on domain names with "squatters" a few times before and they normally get back to me later with a drastically reduced price, like maybe half. If I don't bite then, they continue to email me with lower offers until I buy or they figure out that we are too far apart on the price.

By the way, I was born in Fall River.
