On the Facebook fan page yesterday, I asked the question "If you could work on one game, past or present, what would it be and why? What changes would you have made to the game!?". As there was a big response to this question, I thought that it would be a good idea to start a forum thread on it! So, which game?!

I didn't post on Facebook, for fear of looking even more like a nerd ... But there's no denial here so...

More screenies...http://dinomicro.online.fr/Test/Atari/Captive/Captive.html

Captive, Mindscape (Tony Crowther) 1990. It was an epic RPG inspired by Dungeon Master, however it was kinda developed to be better on the Amiga as revenge for their 1mb only version of DM. The game was massive, would take a lifetime to see the whole game, as it used a level generation system. Only the first level was actually designed.
What I liked most about it, was even back in 1990, it was a strong sand box style game - you had full control over everything, from opening and closing doors, locking doors even, to hacking computer terminals, running software on your droids to auto-map, or to add a compass. It allowed a lot of customisation, several weapons and interchangable armor. At one point I remember being stuck with a badly damaged droid behind a door, so I took it to pieces and left it there while I cleared the area and found a shop to buy some replacement parts. Not many games back then allowed that sort of freedom, in fact I struggle to remember one game that even comes close. As I said, Tony Crowther prefered the Amiga, but the ST version was still amazing, some game designs are too good to be ruined by the lack of a few colours, or sound channels, or blitter chips.

I wouldn't change very much if I had worked on it - the most annying thing was a few bugs that made levels impossible to complete, until a fix was released, mentioned in a magazine, and you were lucky enough to have the magazine and find the fix - which was usually just a lock combination. Gaming was sometimes a dark and lonely place before the internet. It was Dungeon Master with decent graphics, and lots of gadgets, and had some great positional stereo sound on the STE and Amiga (best sound of any ST game IMO).

The game is still discussed, with fans hankering for a remake, however Tony Crowther has said that he doesn't want anyone to remake it, which is a little rich considering that it was inspired by Dungeon Master. Personally, I'd love to see an iPhone or DS version - I'd kill to see a multiplayer version.

Tough decision. I'd have to choose between one these three games:

Transport Tycoon (Chris Sawyer)
I wish I would have worked on this game, because I think it's so well done. Even today it's still my favorite economic strategy game, so I wouldn't have much to improve there. I can still get lost in it four hours. I think Chris Sawyer put lots of heart into all the details and that's what I love about a game, if you can see that.

Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time (Nintendo)
Well, it's simply the best game of all time in my opinion. Oh jesus, if I had participated in its development I'd feel like a god right now. Again, not much to improve, but I'd add a split screen multiplayer to be activated if you had found each and every item in the game. Then you could fool around with a friend at Hyrule field and shoot arrows at each other!

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (Retro Studios)
An awesome game that I really enjoyed to play. Great controls (I'm one of those people that think Wii controls are even more natural to play FPS games than mouse & keyboard) and nice visuals, just overall well designed. But I think the game definitly deserves an online multiplayer mode, so I'd work on that.

Now the plot thickens, the fps decreases, and the awesomeness goes through the roof.

I would work on Halo: Combat Evolved. I really enjoyed it, but it DIDN'T HAVE CO-OP on PC! I'd work on that.

I would work on GTA San Andreas because it looks chaotic and fun or Elite because it is mind blowing or Heavy Rain. I think you'd be a pretty amazing programmer after you worked on those three games.

I would want to work on Morrowind (my favorite game of all time) or anything by Tim Schaffer just to get to work with him.

HALF LIFE 2!!!!!!!!!

Who the hell is General Failure? And why is he trying to read my hard disk?

My software never has bugs. It just develops random features.

Definitely top notch production values at the time.

Baal by Psygnosis.

It was an old Amiga game released in 1988 (had to look that up). I remember just sitting there and listening to the music play at the startup screen because the lights on my keyboard would blink in sync with the music.

What I'd change in the game is perhaps add a mini-map since I often didn't know where or what I was suppose to do. The game need some additional guidance. I also felt it need a little more to do in the gameplay, more monsters to shoot or something.

For me, it'd be more about working with the guys at Psygnosis than on any actual game in particular.

Another would've been Obliterator, and I would've fixed their horrible controls in the game.

I would say something like Manic Miner. Makes you legendary (along with tha game), oodles of cash, and all at a time when it was possible to do by yourself, as a kid, in your bedroom, in a week... My God, I wish I had more get up and go at the time instead of being amazingly lazy. Then again, I wish that now too...

Oh, and out of all that don't underestimate the DIY bit. I mean would you rather code *everything* for a game that people remember for decades, or be the bloke who provided the inventory system for a modern game? Must be right boring after a few months of playing about with the same thing on a small part of a game, that possibly dozens or hundreds of people are working on.

Obviously I would have also loved to work on my favourite game : Elite. Great stuff. And ticks pretty much all the boxes of the above (although there was 2 of them).

Sigh. Getting all misty eyed now. Sniff.

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing

Roller Coaster Tycoon!

Absolutely love that game and anything set in a similar 2D isometric style. If I seriously considered making a game for release, it would be in that style.

Just love sim games like that.

Vandal Hearts and Vandal Hearts 2.

See
Vandal Hearts review

Vandal Hearts 2 review

Both great turn-based games with an interesting storyline and simple yet interesting battle systems.

Changes?

1. Bring the graphics up-to-date with decent 3D models and scenes.
2. Write a PC version.

If I ever make an RPG game I would probably do something similar.

Edit Fixed links.
