I agree that it's a pretty big issue, but as long as open source communities continue to grow, and information sites like Wikipedia or other sites with free, correct educational material stay up, the internet won't be changed as much as some people make it out to be.
the thing that really really worries me is the search of digital intellectual property. A government backed association would seriously have the ability to manipulate virtually anything hooked up to the internet, save for the programmer/cryptographer/hacker elites. In a decent modern country there needs to be room for rebellion and anti-government things. Like the cliche goes, people shouldn't be afraid of their governments, their governments should be afraid of the people.
If it becomes standard to search intellectual property when travelling around... I'll help support against that.
