September 3D compo!

"The Metal Worker"

Rules/Ideas:

1) Polygon Limit: 5000
2) Use normal maps and textures to enhance the "Metalworked" feel
3) Would love to see textures which give the model the appearance of still glowing red in areas, as if the model has just been finished (Or even half finished)
4) Use Google to research the different finishes certain models have after being metal worked
5) Have Fun! Let your imagination run wild on this one

Deadline:
September 28th

Please upload your model to your post and state that the entry is your final submission when you have finished.

(Cheers to David Gervais for coming up with this month's competition and for creating a great banner)

Have fun guys!

I am pretty certain any kind of maps are allowed O.o thats sorrta the point with metals, the materials (maps) is what makes it look metal, not the model

I'd say create whatever maps needed to make it look the part.

Great idea. I already have an idea, I think I'll recreate a certain movie scene, forging of a certain sword.

Hmm... I have an idea I might use for this compo.

Oh, and is it a rule that it must be metal.. I mean, if I make something that resembles something often associated with metal, can I make this then?

And another question, the whole model must be made out of metal? (or look like metal)

It would be preferable if the entire sculpture resembled something that had been metal worked.

This could be put across by creating a texture which had a galvanized finish, or a brushed/cut finished as if it was milled or even dents from hammer strikes etc.

Its probably worth taking a look at all the different types of metal working, machining and casting that are used today and were used in the past.
You could also get creative with the types of joins (if you are modeling something that isn't 1 part), so think of welding seams etc.

Im thinking the poor mans mecha ;D

Too cheap to buy his own metal, it fell upon the local scrapyard, his trusty hammer and welding torch to create his dreams, Scrap man. Should be fun lol. Nothing over the top maybe some low poly goodness mixed with a highish poly scene. Lets start then with some sketch's

I might try to make a certain ring from a certain movie based on a certain book. I suck at modeling though. So it might take some time.

Sorry, I have never entered this competition before, so I apologize if this sounds stupid, but are animations permitted?

hah ok i have already done an anvil but i just got my 3ds Max 2011 student and decided to test it out (never used it before).

I think im getting used to the basic tools and mental ray is cool

the polys in the middle werent necessary except for my high poly bake so i decided to give it some fair topology.

this is my low poly render

here's the back angle

[edit]

Done with the high poly, just took it into mudbox and smoothed off the edges and sculpted with a nice stamp.

just one oopsie,,,
i forgot to unwrap my low poly :/

anyway, if all doesnt go as planned, here is my turntable for my anvil.

Some progress on mine: the geometry is pretty much done, and the diamonds are textured so they are good to go. The metal is only a material at the moment though so my next step will be to reproduce it with textures/maps.

This is actually based on my wife's wedding set, which I cast and made by hand from a carved wax base, although her's is in white gold. I felt that yellow would be more identifiable as gold for the compo.

a ring by any other name lol
[edit]

i finished my anvil low poly bake ... finally. heh it was my first bake, my first model in max, and my first time using mudbox.

After countless problems and great advice from:
Quik
Mike5424
Camouflage Studios

i finally finished this

Comes in at 206 poly's.

(this is just part of my project, not my [edit] final [/edit] entry)

thanks guys.

Actually that looks about the right size. Depends on what the anvil is used for. That type would be good for armor building. Joints and smaller pieces would be perfect for shaping on a thinner anvil like that.

My only crit is the 'horn' should actually be rounded on top. Usually you only see a flat one on a double horn anvil. Or at least the ones I've used have always had a single round horn or two horns with one flat and one rounded. Though again it's all about what the anvil is actually used for. If it's for armor, the horn is used to shape metal, make curves and other custom work.

BigAdd can I participate with this model in the competition ???

In that time she never had the texture. and it has been redone 2 times since 3 September to participate in the competition (I had to do it again to reduce the number of triangles from 4800 to 3100, as competition for a maximum of 5000 and I plan to have at least 12 objects and 1,900 triangles, I think for this is quite enough).

Hmmm I dunno really. It is a rule that no previously made work should be submitted to the compo.

How about trying out something new? You have 20 days to come up with a new model.

I'll have a think about it, but for the time being, try make something else.

Cheers,

As Henry Ham said, if you made them for the competition then you are allowed to enter.

So yes, you can enter your forging factory entry.
