Hello everyone,

n00b to DarkBasic, downloaded the trial versiona and going through the Monster Hunt 3D Tutorial to get a feel for it, but it seems that the framerate really sucks. Check the code below for exactly what I typed, but all I did was draw a sphere and I'm getting 32 FPS, and this is on a P4 2.6GHz, NVidia Quattro video card and 1GB of RAM. Same thing on my home pc, a Athlon XP 2100+ with Radeon 9500 128MB. What gives??? Is there a issue with DarkBasic trial download not allowing faster FPS? What am I doing wrong???

Add "sync rate 0" at the top of your program.

Check the FPS rate then.

Cheers,

Rich

Thanks Rich, I knew it was something stupid I was (or wasn't) doing.
Changed the first line to read
SYNC ON : SYNC RATE 0
and the framerate jumped to 62.
Better, but not the super fast speed I was hoping for since I can hit over 100 FPS in Quake 3 with all options on high. If I start dropping lights and motion and stuff, how much fraterate will I lose, I wonder...

If DarkBasic Pro better on framerate? How much better?

With DBPro and this code I get ~520 fps .

God is real, unless declared integer.

Actually, try putting the line

backdrop on

before the main loop, as this will switch to 3D mode, and your GFX card should speed things up a lot. Not 100% sure on that though, but its worth a try.

Cheers,
Kentaree

Yes it's considerably faster. However you should still get more than 60 fps in DB. It's entirely possible your video card cannot refresh faster than that in that resolution. Sometimes these things are controlled from your Advanced Settings for your card. Might be worth hunting around a bit.

Cheers,

Rich

same here, even just using the print command it stays at 32fps, with sync rate 0 its around 63fps.
i think its because im using xp, raven shield also stays at that frame rate. On my other comp with darkbasic it ran much faster, i dont rember exactly what the frame rate was at sync rate 0 i think around 300fps.
so i dont think its the video card, its just xp limiting its resources to the game.

hmmm, i get about 14 fps with sync rate at 0 and at any other values...

im running a pentium 4, 1.6Ghz, 768 Mb SD RAM, 32Mb TNT2...

Using XP SP1 and Directx 9.1 installed.

What is it that does that?

Tried the 'backdrop on' option, no difference...

The code I'm using now is below, still at 62 FPS no matter what settings my video card are set to. Since I didn't change the resolution, it's running the default, which is 640x480, right?
This is a bit odd, that both my work and home computer are running this simple little code this slowly. Both are on XP, but how can that be the problem? I have seen well over 60 FPS on games, why should DB run so poorly?

Might be worth trying the 1024x768 mode in DB - I found that always runs quicker than 640x480 with nVidia cards.

I now have DarkBasic classic running at about 75 fps max. A little better, but not much.
Got DarkBasic Pro Demo Lite installed and tried that with the same code, frame rates jumped to 220!! and this is on my somewhat crappy work computer. Can't wait to test it at home on my gaming rig. DB Pro is definitely the way to go for creating 3D games, I'll test in DBC until I can get up the money to purchase Pro, its really worth it.
