For Christmas last year I received a set of neodymium magnets, and I love them! They're ridiculously powerful for their size and SO MUCH FUN to play with. I later purchased some Buckyballs as well as some larger block magnets and they're incredibly addictive (although the block magnets can pinch your fingers pretty hard if you're not careful...).

If you want to buy some I would suggest K&J Magnetics--they seem to have good prices and a huge selection to choose from. I wouldn't suggest buying anything larger than 1/4" cubes unless you know what to expect.

Fun things to do with them:

-Play with them!
-Make magnetic accelerators.
-Play with ferrofluid.
-Levitation!
-Make a homopolar motor!
-Crush things!
-World domination!

You can also build a speaker with a magnet, wire, cardboard and glue. I've done it myself, but the speaker turned out very quiet because my magnet was weak.
