Appears he died of cancer at 85 on October 14.

He discovered fractals and so we lost a great mathemetician.

I just saw a video of him yesterday, he looked fine

I need ta get this book.

'tis a sad day

[edit]
I actually thought he had already passed away (like famous mathematicians you hear about like euler or newton), and I only found out the other day that he -was- still alive.

So you were the one who jinxed him. Way to go Neuro Fuzzy, will you be killing any other famous mathematicians we should know about?

But seriously, read it in the news this morning.

Speaking of other famous mathematicians, there was also a story about someone raising money to build a full working model of Babbage's Differential engine. I'll see if I can get the link.

I thought it was for the analytic engine, not the difference engine?
Difference engine already has an existing working replica.

I didn't even know Mandelbrot was alive or that he had died. The news only tells us how many stabbings there have been, new reasons why we should live in fear, and what dull celebrities have had for breakfast. If you are lucky enough to live in Britain you'll also get endless updates on Strictly Come Dancing!

Sorry yeh you're right. Every time I think of Babbage I just think of the difference engine. My bad.

Sure, but you've heard of Fractals!

Fractals are complex images that can be zoomed into for ever. The thing that makes these images special is that they stay just as complex as in the beginning, no matter how far you zoom in.

Try Xaos, it's a free fractal zoomer. And here is some shameless advertisement for a Mandelbrot Zoomer I programmed:

Fractal art is one of my greatest passions recently, I'm sad to see the founding father of it go. Right now f--l--a--r--k on DeviantArt is running another challenge(he does them weekly, if you're an apophysis fractal artist check him out), but this week it's a homage to Mandelbrot. I'll almost definitely be participating in this weeks challenge

Wow, I've never seen a fractal look like this:

Now that's art!

One ring to find them...

I love the colours in these. How are they made?

I'm also wondering how they are made... Are they really fractals, generated by pure maths? Or did some dude just draw it in gimp and call it a fractal? I mean, look at the next pic here. It's called a "fractal cat", but is it really a fractal? I find that hard to believe.

BTW, the first pick is awesome obese!

There are various options for making fractals. The most popular programs for making them are Apophysis and Ultra Fractal. The former is free, the latter is paid software.

As for the fractal cat/cheetah/various other animals fractalized, I don't believe these were generated with fractal programs at all, if they were at all, it wasn't purely done with the mathematical aspect of them.

There are however, options for using pictures in your fractals. With UF, I honestly don't know. With Apophysis(which can be found here: http://xyrus02.deviantart.com/art/Apophysis-7X-134116371), after you get used to working with it, there is an Image plugin made by Xyrus02(the same guy who is updating apophysis) which is here: http://xyrus02.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d2tschq

As for learning how to make fractals in the first place, deviantart has a multitude of resources in that regard. A good place to start if you're curious is Fractal Resources. They have tutorials and other resources for various fractal related things.

And yes, I am a fractal artist
