i have the same thing in my grandmas house but the roof there is made of iron and is at least 60 years old. what material is the roof made out of? id say go take a look at it, call the roofing service if you need to. if its iron like mine perhaps you should coat it with fresh paint but that wont last you very long so maybe its time to replace the whole roof i dont know, you should at least take a lok at whats happening up there.

wooden? well those wont last long unless thqey are painted but still stuff like that will have to be painted every year or two. stainless steel seems to be to current style these days, We already have some parts of our roof replaced with stainless steel to replace the old rusted iron panels. to be honest, the whole hose needs to be replaced really

Yeah, actually I don't know if they are painted but they've lasted a while... Also, we have asphalt shingles. Most of the houses in my neighborhood are at least 200 years old.

i guess asphalt shingles are good, but stainless steel is so much better. everyone uses it around here the only problem is its slippery. very dangerous when you are trying to clean off the snow on your roof. Unfourtunatley my house is of very poor build quality and the large amounts of snow is a problem (i suspect thats why my kitchen roof is leaking because i didnt clean up the snow last winter. Also for some really weird and bizzar reason every winter we have a giant icicle growing from the roof and up... yes the icicle is gointed upward and its giant grows up to 1.5 meters. i think it has something to do with our gas exhaust system

What do you need to know? I've fixed and renovated quite a large portion of my roof.

Chances are the roofing paper that lies between your shingles and the plywood of your roof either has a hole on it or is lifted up somewhere allowing the water to seep into the plywood and then through the insulation into the drywall below where you're seeing wet spots or something similar on the cieling.

Obviously I cant know for sure but your best bet is to start off by looking at the roof after it's rained (or after you've poored water on it) and checking if there is anywhere water is pooling (if you have a flat roof).

If you've got a peeked roof, you're going to want to get up there and take a good look at all the shingles and see if any of them have been lifted up or damaged by wildlife or something else. Pay close attention to where two planes meet (like if you have a chimney, check around there on the roof).

But really theres not much help you can get past that on a programming forum. Make some calls in your area, theres plenty of people thatll check that for you for relatively cheap.

If it's leaking, either you're missing a few shingles or the tar paper underneath needs replaced. Depending on how much damage has already been done, a portion of the plywood may need to be cut and replaced.

I did house construction about 10 years ago.

Plywood? It'd be good to know where you're from since roofing is done differently in other places.

Im in indaiana. The roof was redone about 5 years ago. I have not had a chance to go over there yet an check the roof but I thank you all for the posts. I think I have a good idea were I need to check now. she has a tree that likes to rub around the troubled area. Problem now is its snowed. So Im thinking the roof will be to icy to climb on. I think I might just tell my mom to call a pro since its winter now.

You have the 3/4" plywood nailed over the trusses, then the tar paper, then shingles. I'm in Ohio.

It snowed here too.
