Help! I have 3DS Max 4.2 and i can't figure out how to make rooms. I'm making a room shape with a circle split into 8 segments (so it's an octagon) and i want to use this as a room. However i can't figue out how to do it as the shape does not appear to be hollow, or does not light inside. I've put lights inside the shape and that done nothing. I have been seaching the web and the tutorials for hours and i still cant figure it out. Do i have to build the room up from planes? I want to make the Object hollow and usable as a room. In the Lighting Tutorial it mentions "Inverse Normals" when they use a box as a room. How do i use boxes and other objects as rooms? I can't find a good tutorial on this anywhere. Please help me if you can. -DivW

Max isn`t the best thing for this if you are thinking of turning it into a BSP.However if you convert it to an editable mesh then click on the modifiers menu then select mesh editing followed by the Normal modifier you will the be able to select flip normals which will turn your object inside out. Hope this Helps.

No, i want this as a .3DS file. Hopefully. I'm trying to make the inside of a spaceship in 3DS Max so i can make a walkthrough. I was hoping to put it up on my website as a Virtual Walkthrough. The basic shape is an octagon, with a cylindrical pathway leading up to a pyramidal bridge. Here's an ASCII art of the shape:

The cylender connectiing the bridge and the main room has a flat grille walkway through it. What shapes can i use to make this model up? Please forgive my ignorance as i'm new to the world of 3D modelling. 3DS Max is a bit difficult to start out in-it's functions are far too numerous. But i got it from my school, and i can't really afford any other software packages. Any help would be great. I'd attach a pic instead of ASCII pic.

Wait...just read the last part of your post. Thanks, gonna go try that out.

There you go. Ignore the dots please, just look at the shape.

to achieve the grill effect I would use a flat plain with colour 0,0,0 for the bits you want to see through, This might not show up in Max but will in DB/DBPro. If you send me the file I will have a look at it for you with some instructions on how I did it.

Doesn't Max support a Hollow function?!? If not, give DeleD a try. You can achieve what you want in 2 seconds. At least, in the new version 0.8. But DeleD doesn't support 3DS files yet though...
