as some of you may know, the graphics cards in my PC are dead as door-nails. I'm looking into another video card, and I'm looking at a price range of around 150$ to 250$. I was thinking of either a 460 or a 465, does anyone have any recommendations which one I should choose, and if not, what card I should get?

I usually use my machine for stuff like FPSC, and playing games like mirror's edge and far cry and crysis and Counter Strike: Source. I'm looking for a card that can handle all of these (well, maybe not crysis) easily.

also, keep in mind that my case is less than ideal. it's actually quite awful. I'm hoping for a video card that won't overheat or get too hot in less-than-perfect air cooled conditions.

I bought an EVGA GeForce 450 for $90 a few weeks ago and it can play Crysis nearly maxed at 1680x1050. And my case is horrible.

With no fans on in my case () my computer gets quite loud, but I think its just the processor. With one side fan directed at the CPU, it stays fairly quiet.

Other machine specs:

Hex core 3.0Ghz AMD processor (My first AMD processor, only $200 )
4 GB DDR3 1600Mhz RAM (Cheap! Was $45)
Garbage medium tower (Don't know where it came from. )

i guess gtx 460 is a good higer than average card. if you want something significantly more powerful, go straight for the 470. Personally i have a 2 gb 460 on one of my PCs altho i am an ATI fan myself.

I asked the same question just yesterday and people suggested a 450, but neither newegg or tigerdirect even carries them. Far as I could tell from reviews, the 460 runs just as well as a 465 but its a little cheaper. The 460 sounded like it ran slightly cooler and used less power, which has been my main focus for the system I currently have built.

so a 460 is the way to go? okay. on nvidia it looks like one has more graphics power and less computing power, but one has less graphics power and more computing power. I have no idea what that means, but whatever. my old cards were duel 9800gt's in SLI

Buy the GTX460 1gb version which is slightly faster from 768mb version. Or you can wait until the end of January and buy a GTX560.

The new Radeon 6850 and the unlocking to 6870 is a pretty big hit right now,but I still prefer Nvidia for the sake of drivers.

Sparkle seems to have better prices, but since I'd never heard of the manufacturer before I was a bit skeptical about quality. So you guys are saying they're good stuff eh?

Yeah. They're nice. My first build with them. Newegg all has 5 star reviews on their GTX/GTS products.

GTA4 when maxed out uses over 1.5gb.

You may not even realize how much memory your game uses, but when you run out the game slows to a crawl.

For example, you might play a game where when you max our the texture detail it slows incredibly, that's 100 percent cuz you ran out of graphics ram. If you had enough, it wouldn't slow down at all.

oh, I thought texture fill rate mattered for textures maxed out in games.

It sticks to the the 460s basic clock speeds though. You'll only take advantage the 2GB if you have a game that needs it.

For a bad case, I'd suggest the [href=http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/2010/07/12/nvidia-geforce-gtx-460-graphics-card-review/4]Gigabyte 1GB 460
[/href] which is what I have, it has two fans which are very cool and have some cool anti-turbulence design and is amazingly quiet

CoffeeGrunt: Your HD2400 is PCI Express x16. GT430 is not really worth buying, rather build up a little more money and buy a GTS450.

But there's PCI-E 1 and 2 from what I've seen, is the difference nominal? I really don't wanna waste money on an incompatible card.

I can definitely afford that GPU you mentioned by the end of the month, (in all honesty, I have no clue over what brands are best for what, etc, just looking for a new GPU to help ease off the lag I get from UDK)...

ATI usually focuses on the actual graphics cards and makes better graphics cards at a low budget.
Nvidea usually focuses on the drivers and support for their graphics cards.

But, ATI dont make the cards (idk if nvidea do), ATI just make the processors in the cards, the rest is competed by a series of other companies (which is why the price would be low).

I thought only one of your 9800GT's were fried?

The 460 is really nice, I don't have one at the moment but was seriously considering it.

CoffeeGrunt: The speed difference between PCIe 2.1 and 2.0 and 1.0 is so little that its stupid to look at that, but every GPU will work in there.

If you are buying a GTS450,you should look at Gainward or Gigabyte.

I've found a GTS460 for about £80.

I'm not really fussed about speed, just worried that the fittings might be different, although googling the cards shows that they look the same, just wondering if there might be incompatibilities in other areas.

You'll want to make sure your power supply can handle the card. Lot's of cards take 6 pin pci-e cables. If your psu doesn't have one there are adapters from molex (or maybe sata) to 6 pin pci-e.

Graphics cards have now moved up to a 6-pin power cable? Ugh, wrong direction! Wasn't that a similar reason as to why nobody bought the last model Voodoo cards?

The 6-pin connectors offer more power. Most modern PSU's have an abundance of 6-pin connectors. I'm running a ATI Radeon HD5450, and it meets my needs perfectly. I know it's not the top card, but I build my self a pretty nice budget PC. I'm not a fan of the price of Nvidia cards, and being as my ATI Radeon HD5450 has DirectX 11 support, I'm sticking with that. DirectX 11 on Nvidia will run you a hefty price.

I just now realized I've had a typo in my signature for the past 3 years.

Don't put more worries onto CoffeeGrunt. The GTS450 will fit perfectly into your motherboard, you also get a 6-pin to 2x-4pin molex converter so you can easily plug your GPU into power.
