Alrighty, I've spent the morning reading everything I can find on this, but can't get the answer I'm after.

I want to import .X files into 3ds max.

I'm successfully using Panda exporter to EXPORT .X files OUT of 3ds max, but can't find anything that will let me IMPORT them. I know there's one out there, too, because years ago I used to have a working plugin for it, but I can't seem to find it anymore.

Most people have pointed me in the direction of TrueSpace to convert the .X files into .3ds format, however, the version of TrueSpace you can get from their website doesn't let you open .X files and doesn't let you export .3ds files.

Can anyone give me any insight as to how I can import .X files into 3ds max, or, alternatively, convert .X files into .3ds format while retaining animation and UVW mapping?

So I gave it a try, and Blender imports them fine and dandy, but it doesn't seem to grab any of the animation or UVW data... Any thoughts here?

It doesnt... from what i could tell you can only get the mesh using the import script. If your hand with python you could try and implement that or even look online for a alternate script. Since blender has a python interpreter it is possible to create nearly any tools you want for it depending on your python skill. Unfortunately i have none so i cant hlp.

Ive never tried it but check this out:
http://web.t-online.hu/karpo/

its a converting tool for 3d formats. Shareware.

That's a very cool program! Unfortunately when importing .X files it also drops the UV data as well as animation.

But still... Handy! It's kind of like Format Factory for 3D models!

One handy feature that it has is to do very thorough and accurate UV unwrapping of complex models with ease!

Good find, Medusa! That seems to import initial pose information better than the last app, but no animation info

Hi, CumQuaT!

This plugin enables X-File import and export in Max. It also exports animated meshes:
