It's not a program, it's a collection of images that are able to store lighting data.

An HDRI (high-dynamic-range-image) is an thats 48 bit or greater. The larger amount of color data allows for more accuracy in 3d renders. HDRIs are commonly used for reflection an image based lighting.

Anyway, Im working on a nicer scene right now. This one won't just be some sphere's and sub-d boxes. New image in a few hours.

My Dear Frogger Man, I'm well aware of what an HDRI is. I use them quiet frequently. Should I post some of my own?
..if I do Windtech will also....thats not good
(all outta love, Windtech...all outta love

Check out http://www.doschdesign.com for some good HDRI.
They cost though

And http://kelsolaar.3dvf.net/Ressources/MyArt/SharedRessources/HDRI/HDRI.htm for some freebies.

I'm using LW. What are you using?

Max5 plus brazil. I looked into the dosch design collection but I had already purchased these and they were more expensive.
Is lightwave a bucket rendering system? Or is it scanline? Brazils QMC approch to GI is great but I get these little distortions inside each bucket and along the bucket seams. I have the turn the view rate upreally high to correct it and even than its a bit noticable.

Another image soon.

uh, how hard is it actually to slap that kind of HDRI image and make a neat reflecting sphere that shows the surrounding image the right way?

Not too hard. Gets easy quickly. This was my first time using HDRI but its not al automatic. You need to do alot of things like create a new HDRI image thats blurred (and smaller) for the diffuse lighting. You also need to set up the background, make the materials, and set up the color clamping properly on all objects that use it (envrionment maps and the diffuse lighting mostly)

Hmm, I might want to go on about creating some nifty renders, for wallpaper purposes mostly. How fast is the rendering when you use HDRI? (and take into account that I have only 1.33GHz with 512MB)
