(WARNING: 3d lovers turn back now)

I see there are other dwarf fortress threads but... really... I'm in love with this game. Once you actually figure out most of the major game mechanics (not easy!!!), the game becomes amazing!
There's adventure mode and fortress mode. Adventure mode is like a nethack style kind of mode, and fortress mode is where you're sent out with a couple dwarves and a caravan, and have to build a base and survive. The gameplay depth is AMAZING!

For example, in adventure mode, I started out playing as a swordsman. I got a mission to go kill this crossbowman, right? So, I went to his base, and took out this crossbowman and his buddies pretty easily. Then I realized it was getting dark... bogeymen come out at night (not boogey, bogey, oddly). So... I tried to get out of there to a town ASAP, but didn't quite make it. I got surrounded by bogeymen and started fighting them. There are lots of them, but they seem to only bite and punch, and i had pretty high agility so I could outrun them. So I started running and fighting and running and fighting... and then lost the bogeymen by falling into a river. At this point, my character is bruised, cut, and tired, and now wet and cold. So, I started swimming to find a way out, but there were no ramps! Rivers are really dangerous because every enemy can kill you, pretty much. I got assaulted and chased by fish until I finally found a slope, and got out, and managed to run away from more bogeymen until I got to a city.

When I finally got back, I breathed a sigh of relief, then realized that both my characters arms were missing.
-_-
I think a carp bit them off.

Here's some "hype material"
http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=57052.0 - battlefailed (spoiler: they get massacred by skeletal elks. Story starts a quarter of the way through the third page, on reply 36, so skip there)

http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Stories/Bronzemurder#Full_Sized_Images bronzemurder - illustrated battle report

The best stories are the ones told from the gamer's point of view IMO, I'm not that much into some of the roleplaying or made-up stuff (Errm, iunno, I think it gunks up the story).

There's also amazing procedural generation - history AND terrain. It's the game behind the graphics that's amazing

If you want to download it I'd suggest this to start out with:

LAZY newb pack. You can mess with the settings and change tilesets easily! I use the phoebus tileset.

._. well that's nice. I started a new map, and tried to dig out and irrigate an area for farming. That flooded *too much*, and instead of a trickle of water, there was a waterfall down this shaft, breaking most of the bones in my *chief medical dwarf*'s body. WHO WILL FIX HIM?!

Are there any good tutorials for this game? I have played it but never got far because it is so complicated.

What is the best way to set up an inside farm when the map is too cold so the water is frozen?

deep underground water supply or magma-heating. (aquifers might be handy)

ahah, I've been playing adventure mode like crazy. I've always died before I could complete three missions... I think I should make my first priority be getting allies to be used as fodder.

My best one I was a master swordsman, happily waiting till people approached me then lopping their heads off. Then I got attacked by an xbowman and a wrestler. Xbow shot me in the back right before the wrestler grappled me and proceeded to rip my throat out with his teeth...

I found an awesome way to survive in adventure mode (easy way)
Set the map to a medium/small size, the civilization number to high, and the place number to high, then let the history go for 200 or so years. The civilizations will have expanded a bunch, but still be crowded (so not much getting stuck out in the rain, being attacked by bogeymen at night). Then, first thing, stop by a fort and get some allies. (if they die you can take their armor )

BUMP!

I started a succession game with two other people. I've played the first year, and now they play the next two years, before it gets back to me. I've written up stuff about my first year on my website, w/ pix.
http://www.neurofuzzydev.com/succession/
I was in the middle of irrigation and a partially flooded tunnel (to train up dwarves swimming skills), but oh well.

Also... I think I'm in a super shallow part of the crust, because at 25 levels below ground, I hit a "curious structure", and the undead creatures that stormed my base ended up killing three people. That whole area is walled off now. (it could have been much, much worse really. I'd say it's been a successful run).

There are adamantite tubes all over the place, along with undead creatures roaming the caves. If a forgotten beast or some other big building destroyer gets into our base, we're screwed. If we die in the next two years, we'll probably just reclaim the fort and start again. That is... if it isn't completely flooded with demons. (regardless, at its current state, it'll make an amazing spelunking place for adventure mode)

D:
I just played another game of adventurer. This time, I got an axedwarf, and got on a pretty good roll defeating enemies.
Then I found out the king of the area I was in, lived in a fortress nearby. So, I got permission to stay for the night, waited a couple hours, then attacked the king in his sleep. (He's a demon, btw.)
My allies were part of the same kingdom, so naturally, they turned on me. However, it appears that they only turn against me once they get in a direct line of sight with me. So, the allies closest to me started attacking me, but the ones behind them started attacking the people behind me, because they hadn't seen me yet.

Basically, I made a random hostile move, and everyone turned on each other.
Sooo I got knocked down, and managed to scramble away from the mass of people attacking each other. I was kinda on the edge of the fighting, so I managed to kill a couple people. I lost track of the demon lord dude. I think he was flying around above my head. Sooo anyways, the demon lord landed, and started blowing flames left and right. At this point, most of the people fighting with each other were dead, so I decided to try to run. In the big, open courtyard of the castle, I got killed by a crossbowman, while being chased by a hammerdman and a fire-breathing, flying demon lord.

The description of my character is this:
"A medium-sized creature prone to great ambition.
His upper body is gone."

It was definitely worth it... but I don't think I'll do it again, until I have an awesome sword.

lol... I just realized... I guess I should stop posting here and go to the bay12 (dwarf fortress website) forums xD

lower case d. It's case sensitive. "d" goes into the "designations" menu, and then you press "d" again to select "dig". Then you can press enter to start selecting a rectangle, and enter again to stop.

Yes DF is great I think they improved Adventure mode immensely with the new quests and sites, and bogeymen. Sandbox games like these are fun, it's too bad about the interface.

DF and some other game were inspiration for Minecraft, btw.

When I started, I kept the wiki site open and paused the game constantly.
